Air pollution Nerissa Russell

Community and boundaries: The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad had shared ambiance that was found overwhelmingly filled with pollutants and dust. The trans-boundary areas of Pirwadhai, sector I-10 and other areas had very bad air quality due to less tree cover, open garbage burning and vehicular emissions reaching at extreme level with every passing day. The AirVisual data only reported air quality in Chaklala scheme-3 and Bahria Town phase- 2 areas of Rawalpindi where US air quality index (AQI) at Chakalala Scheme-3 was 66 (19.3µg/m3 of particulate matter of 2.5 microns- PM2.5). Hence the air quality was moderate and in Bahria Town phase-2 the air quality was very unhealthy as PM2.5 was 202.7 micrograms per meter cube (µg/m3) with 253 US AQI. Moreover, Rawalpindi was also facing serious environmental risk due to plastic manufacturing units set up in residential areas that had been left unchecked by the EPD and the district administration.

Introduction of interviewer: I have been an environmental activist for a very long time. I was disappointed by the traditional protest and the lobby model that most environmental organizations deploy and wanted to see if we could leverage capital to make a positive social impact. Having lived in the Caribbean, I generally think that air pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues we face today. Continuing to help cities and individuals tackle the environmental crisis. Number wise, this means being deployed in thousands of cities, garnering insights and helping enable data-informed policy to impact citizens in an inclusive and sustainable way. I don’t know how long it will take to eliminate the air pollution threat to our health and the environment, but we are committed to this issue and won’t stop until then.

Impact on community and environment: With air pollution disproportionately affecting low-income communities of colour, localized air quality data is revolutionary in understanding personal exposure. When the toxic levels of pollution we see today are a direct result of anthropocentric actions, we have a responsibility, a duty, to practice environmental stewardship. There’s a huge information gap in current environmental management practices where policymakers simply do not understand air pollution enough to effectively mitigate it.

View on climate change Climate Change is the most pressing challenge that we are facing in the 21st century. However, we are not doing enough to reach the current 2°C target. Most efforts we are taking so far focus on mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions in order to stop CO2 concentration growth by 2050, but this is simply not enough. More aggressive efforts, such as negative emission technologies will inevitably be necessary to save our planet.

Air pollution, in the meantime, is closely related to climate change. Since a majority of today’s air pollution shares the same sources as greenhouse gas emissions, developing air pollution mitigation policies usually result in greenhouse gas emissions reduction, as in China, for example. In addition, air pollution action can be used to raise awareness around the global environmental crisis since it has a much more tangible effect on people’s daily lives while, at the moment, climate change can sometimes be seen as far too distant an issue for the majority of population.

Statistics about air pollution: Chemical decomposition Ozone gas Examples of air pollution Primary and secondary air pollutants

Examples: Primary includes carbon, sulphur, and nitrogen and their oxides and hydrocarbons. Secondary include oxides and salts of the primary and compounds such as ozone and PAN. What is a VOC and what are some examples. Volatile organic compound -- methane , propane, CFC's, gasoline.

Acid deposition: Secondary air pollution of acidic compounds such as sulphuric acid and nitric acid which ultimately settles out on land or on water. Acid deposition is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions. It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and infrastructure.

prevent or control Indoor Pollutants: Have air to air exchangers so there is less build-up in the house, don't smoke, have well vented stoves use fewer products with formaldehyde glues or seal them well so out- gassing doesn't occur. Use less polluting cleaners. Major indoor pollutants: Formaldehyde, Chloroform, Para-dichlorobenzene, Styrene, Tobacco smoke, Radon, Asbestos

Source of indoor pollutants: Formaldehyde -- glues in plywood, particle wood, OSB, carpet, furniture Radon -- uranium rock surrounding the basement Smoke -- fireplaces, smoking tobacco and other stuff Asbestos - best dealt with by simply covering it with paint or plastic not by removing. It was also used as a sound proofer and as an insulator for steam pipes and chimneys. Biological Pollutants Nitrogen Dioxide Indoor Particulate Matter

Ways to prevent air pollution Use cleaner fuels. Use alternative energy sources. Use devices to trap pollutants before they are released. Minimize clutter. Use craft supplies in well-ventilated areas. Remove carpeting if possible. Use a dehumidifier and/or air conditioner to reduce moisture.

Effects of air pollution: Health: animals, plants -- can sickens or kill them. Major problems in animals are respiratory problems such as asthma and lung cancer. Materials --acid deposition causes major deterioration

Conclusion and recommendation: Air pollution has been a serious problem in the world. Without air earth would be unable to sustain life. Spread the word. More efficient use of energy. The use of less-polluting fossil fuels. Increased use of non-fossil energy sources, to the extent that these are compatible with other policy goals. The use of newer and environmentally more benign combustion technologies. Stricter control of air pollutant emissions.
