Body image and self-est eem are cont emporary issues affect ing t eenagers t oday.

Self-est eem is affect ed by t he desire for inclusion in t he eye of ot hers. When

t eenagers have low self-est eem, t hey oft en perceive t hemselves t o be unable t o

mingle and be approached for who t hey are, and t his affect s t heir body image and

self-percept ion (Wilcox, 2016). The process of addressing self-est eem and body

image-relat ed concerns requires t he development of measures t arget ing t eenagers

and societ y in such a way t hat bot h part ies can embrace and appreciat e t heir inherent

diversit y.

Negat ive body image and low self-est eem are enhanced by a plet hora of ext ernal

st ressors such as body weight , physical appearance, color and t ype of hair, and

int elligence level. For t eenagers, t he percept ion of ot hers about t hese fact ors is

crit ical in det ermining t heir abilit y t o feel accommodat ed in societ y. When t hey are

judged based on t heir high weight s, improper hair t ype, or lo int elligence, t here is a

high likelihood t hat t eenagers will prefer being in isolat ion, and t his can have

det riment al effect s on t heir wellbeing (Taylor & Wardy, 2014). Teenagers feel

reject ed when t hey cannot learn t o accept and appreciat e t heir imperfect ions, such

as being overweight or having rough faces as part of t heir lives.

Assessment St rat egies

Assessing t eenagers suffering from body image and self-est eem issues can be useful

if t eenagers are provided wit h opport unit ies for self-evaluat ion. This process will help

in ident ifying t he way t hey underst and t hemselves in t erms of self-percept ion and

t he basis of t he desire t o compare t hemselves wit h ot hers. It will also be an

opport unit y for ident ifying t he t rigger fact ors (Wilcox, 2016). The process of

addressing t he ident ifies issues will require t he int egrat ion of different approaches

such as focus groups and social groups, which will provide an opport unit y for sharing

experiences and int egrat ing wit h ot hers t o develop sust ainable solut ions and be

hopeful.

Some of t he quest ions t hat can define t he assessment process include?

· What are some of your weaknesses?

From an et hical perspect ive, confident ialit y should be t he det ermining fact or in a

conversat ion wit h t eenagers. It would be necessary t o reveal informat ion t o parent s

or guardians if it is based on t he desire t o prot ect and enhance t he life and healt h of

t he t eenager (Taylor & Wardy, 2014). Whenever t here is sufficient evidence revealing

t he possibilit y t hat a t eenager could harm himself or herself or if t he parent s or

guarding ae cont ribut ing t o t he predicament s of t he t eenager, t hen sharing would be

warrant ed.

Support Opt ions for Adolescent s Encount ering Ext ernal St ressors

Addressing t he problem of self-est eem and body image would require collaborat ion

bet ween t he t eenagers and t he counselor. These are because t he lat t er wit h be

providing a professional and experienced approach t hat will be based on developing

unique, posit ive, and const ruct ive solut ions t o t he t eenagers. Exposing t he t eenagers

t o group forums will also be a way of ensuring t hat t hey share t heir challenges wit h

t heir peers. Through t his approach, it will be possible t o minimize t he possibilit y of

feeling reject ed because of t he social support received from peers (Taylor & Wardy,

2014). The int egrat ion of parent al assist ance can also be a way t hrough which

t eenagers will be provided wit h a plat form for care and love despit e t he challenges

t hat t hey may be facing in t he ext ernal environment .
