African Americans are at part icularly high risk for t he development of t ype 2 diabet es

(Healt h People 2020).

Compared t o non-Hispanic whit es of similar age, African American adult s are 1.7 t imes

as likely t o cont ract diabet es.

Compared wit h ot her communit ies African Americans are disproport ionat ely burdened

by high prevalence and deat h rat es due t o diabet es.

In 2014, 13.4 percent of African Americans aged 18 years and over were diagnosed

wit h diabet es compared t o 7.3 percent of t he non-Hispanic Whit es (HHS.gov).

African American women have a higher prevalence of diagnosed diabet es (9.9%) as

compared t o men (9.2).

A t ot al of 39.5 deat hs per 100,000 African Americans were regist ered in 2013 as

compared t o 18.6 deat hs per 100,000 Non-Hispanic Whit es.

According t o t hese st at ist ics, t he African American populat ion is exposed t o higher

risk fact ors relat ed t o diabet es as compared wit h t he non-Hispanic Whit e populat ion.

Healt h Disparit y Issues

Some of t he healt h disparit y issues affect ing t he African American communit y in

relat ion t o diabet es include:

Lack of insurance coverage due t o low income levels.

Limit ed access t o primary care needed for prevent ion and chronic disease

management (King et al., 2018).

Limit ed access t o t imely medical care.

Neglect by healt h providers.

Lack of adequat e government int ervent ion t o address exist ing barriers t o qualit y

healt hcare.

In Mississippi; t he st at e wit h t he largest populat ion of African Americans, t here were

no reduct ions in diabet es mort alit y rat es bet ween 2006 and 2016 which is t he period

bet ween pre-Medicaid expansion (2008-2010) and post -Medicaid expansion (2014-

2016). It was discovered t hat Medicaid was not expanded bet ween t hese period (King

et al., 2018).

Addit ionally, in Louisiana, t he st at e wit h t he second largest populat ion of African

Americans, Medicaid coverage was not expanded unt il 2016 (King et al., 2018).
