Opt ions in t he job market
The IOM report has posit ively impact ed t he nursing educat ion and leadership as t he
report encourages nurses t o feat t heir full pot ent ial in leadership and educat ion
t hrough a cont inuous educat ional program. A BSN degree has been ut ilized as t he
ent ry-level in many hospit als as t hese applicant s can offer diverse management
abilit ies like effect ive crit ical t hinking abilit ies, development of sound decisions, and
problem-solving abilit ies. I believe t hat t here is need t o pursue a baccalaureat e
degree and lat er gain a mast er's as t he market is becoming more compet it ive. “In
regards t o t he IOM report in 2010, t here will be more increase in t he number of nurses
wit h a baccalaureat e degree t o 80% by t he year 2020” (Young et al., 2015). This is
clear project ion t hat t here will be more need for BSN graduat e nurses and people who
have advanced t heir st udies in order t o be compet it ive and able t o provide qualit y
services t o t he people.

easy t o enroll for advanced pract ice programs as compared t o an associat e or
diploma-prepared nurse. There is a need t o advance t he educat ional level every t ime
in t he nursing field in order t o remain compet it ive and updat ed about current
pract ices.
Professional cert ificat ion and advanced degrees
According t o t he Inst it ut e of Medicine (IOM) report (2010), “nurses should achieve
higher levels of educat ion and t raining t hrough an improved educat ion syst em t hat
promot es seamless academic progression.” I concur wit h t his provision advancement
of educat ion increases our abilit y t o provide qualit y services t o t he people as well as
achieve high managerial posit ions in t he healt hcare indust ry. I plan t o finish my BSN
degree and t hen enroll for a Mast er of Science in Nursing degree. I plan t o st art saving
my income t hat will facilit at e my fut ure educat ional advancement act ivit ies. Also, I am
looking for way t hat I can get scholarships t hat will facilit at e my mast er’s degree and
t he Doct or of Nursing Pract ice (DNP). I wish t o gain t he MSN in nursing as t his will help
me t o learn t he business side of nursing and assist in making an impact in t he healt h
care indust ry. MSN in nursing helps in creat ing more awareness of finance, leadership,
policies, and management , among ot her sect ors.
By t he years 2025, I ant icipat e having st art ed my Doct or of Nursing Pract ice degree in
a reput able but affordable universit y in t he count ry. Achieving a Ph.D. in nursing
pract ice has been in my dreams since I decided t o join t he profession and I have no
doubt t his will be achievable. Addit ionally, I ant icipat e joining various seminars and
educat ional programs t hat will increase my skill and expert ise in nursing as t his will
facilit at e t he provision of effect ive services t o t he pat ient and societ y at large.
Achieving a Ph.D. in nursing pract ice is import ant as t his will facilit at e my abilit y t o
develop policies t hat will have impact s in t he nursing sect or. DNP provides more
t raining exposure in sect ors like healt h care policy, evidence-based pract ice, syst ems
leadership, int erprofessional collaborat ion, and healt h informat ion syst ems among
ot hers.
Compet it iveness in increasing your level of educat ion
In every professional field in t he market , t here is need for t he candidat es t o advance
t heir educat ional levels in order t o remain compet it ive and relevant in t he given
indust ry. The same concept s apply t o nurse or healt hcare indust ry, whereas provided
by IOM report , t here is need for nurses t o have a cont inuous educat ional program as
t his will increase t heir effect iveness and compet it iveness in t he market . As provided
by t he U.S. Bureau of Healt h Professions, “BSN nurses are considered t o make more
revenue as equat ed t o a diploma or associat e nurses. Nonet heless, t his may vary wit h
job t it les.”
Nurses wit h BSN degree have bet t er opport unit ies of get t ing a managerial posit ion in
healt hcare facilit ies as compared t o diploma nurses or advanced pract ice nurses. Also,
t here are some career opport unit ies in some st at es t hat are only available for BSN-
prepared nurses such as nurse pract it ioners, nurse anest het ist and advanced pract ice
professions of clinical nurse specialist among ot hers. A nurse wit h MSN has a bet t er
opport unit y of get t ing a given managerial posit ion as compared t o a BSN nurse or
diploma nurse (Nat ional Associat ion of School Nurses, 2016). This is a clear elaborat ion
of how advancing your skills can increase your compet it iveness in t he market .
Furt hermore, t echnology and nursing pract ice keeps on changing t ime and again.
Therefore, nurse t hat have advanced t heir skills have a good underst anding of current
t rends, t echnology and pract ices hence, t hey st and a bet t er chance in t he fut ure as
compared t o convent ional nurses.
Also, advancing t he level of educat ion enhances t he abilit y t o provide an effect ive
and personalized evidence-based int ervent ion t o t he pat ient hence increasing
cust omer sat isfact ion level and qualit y of services. A nurse t hat cont inuously advance
t heir level of educat ion has a high abilit y t o develop effect ive decision when faced
wit h dilemma and crit ical issues.

Relat ionship of cont inuing nursing educat ion t o compet ency, at t it udes, knowledge,
and t he ANA Scope and St andards for Pract ice and Code of Et hics.
The Inst it ut e of Medicine (IOM) report (2010), st at es t hat t he main object ives of
nursing cont inuous educat ion are t o prepare nurses on how t o meet and supersede
diverse requirement s of t he pat ient as well as t o prepare t he nurses t owards fut ure
pract ices, leadership, safet y of t he pat ient and provision of an evidence-based
int ervent ion. Cont inuous educat ion increases t he nurse compet ence, at t it ude and
knowledge levels as t hey will be able t o provide services based on current pract ices
and professionalism. Professional development t hat is facilit at ed by cont inuous
nursing educat ion is import ant in enlight ening t he nurse on what t o do as well as
Scope and St andards for Pract ice and Code of Et hics. Nurses t hat have cont inuous
nursing educat ion are able t o get more exposure in t erm of knowledge, scope of
pract ices, compet ence, and at t it ude. This aut omat ically enables t hem t o provide a
more personalized and effect ive int ervent ion t o t he pat ient as compared t o t hose
who have not advanced t heir st udies.
Cont inuing nursing educat ion should be mandat ory
It is import ant t o not e t hat nursing is a very import ant profession as you are dealing
wit h t he lives of people in societ y. Due t o t he sensit ivit y of t he nursing pract ices it is
import ant for all nurses t o advance t heir educat ion cont inuously in order t o be
effect ive (Grand Canyon Universit y, 2018). Healt h care professionals should have a
long-t ime educat ional program in order t o refresh t heir knowledge, increase
innovat ions, and embrace t he t rends in t he market . I believe t hat nursing is t he only
profession where you will have t o deal wit h t he client and underst and t hem in all
dimensions. Therefore, it is import ant and mandat ory t o keep on advancing t heir skills
in order t o remain compet it ive and effect ive. Moreover, t here is need t o ensure
uniformit y and equal st andards in t he healt h indust ry. Thus, all t he nurses should be
mandat ed t o advance t heir skills in order t o maint ain t he st andards or uniformit y in
service provision wit hin t he indust ry.
