Importance of American Nurses Association

American nurses’ association (ANA) is a professional organization for advancing and

protecting the nursing profession. It was formed in 1896 as nurses associated alumnae and was

later renamed to American Nurses Association in 1911. The organization is based in silver spring,

Maryland with its current president being Ernest Grant. The body advocates for the nurses and

initially was formed for the enhancement of nursing care for American soldiers. Its first president

was Isabel Hampton Robb. It is a professional organization that represents registered nurses in the

United States through its 54 constituent member associations (American Nurses Association.

2020)

The ANA mission is representing the registered nurses in the United States. It is involved

in establishing standards of nursing practice, promoting the nurses’ rights in their workplace as

well as advancing the economic welfare of the nurses as well as their general welfare. The

organization has three subsidiary organizations that is American Academy of Nursing that serve

the public and nursing profession through advancing health policies and practice by generating,

synthesizing and disseminating nursing knowledge, American Nurses Credentialing Centre which

credentials the nurses in their specialties and finally the American Nurses Foundation which is the

charitable and philanthropic arm of the organization ( Harper & Maloney, 2017) .

The members of the ANA benefits from the organization through advancement of their

career where they are offered free development resources and webinars, the get updated with the

most up-to-date Nursing news, they get to save money through big discounts on certifications,

publications and more offers. The members also get to connect with other registered nurses for

support and advices. The members also get to make their voices heard and offers the opportunity

to tell policy makers their opinions as well as receiving state nurse association member benefits.

Importance of Joining ANA

By joining ANA one gets to unite with other peers and have a stronger voice especially in

the political arena on local, state as well as national levels. An example to this is when the host of

the daytime talk show created controversy after they claimed the nursing professional is not well

valued. The nurses through the organization united and talked in one voice until the show issued

an official apology.

Another importance is the organization offers the nurses continued education, certification

opportunities and other role related competence through their educational conferences. As changes

in healthcare occurs almost daily, the organization keeps the members updated as it also aligns the

nurses to their specialization and the changes in the specialty. The organization also promotes and

encourages the use of evidence-based practices to its members (Schmidt, 2018). The ANA holds

annual conferences which brings together nurses from different states and fields across the country

as well as worldwide where they share their experiences and knowledge. These conferences also

serve as a platform for networking among the nurses.

How the Organization Keeps its Members Informed?

The ANA keeps its members informed of the healthcare changes as well as the changes to

practice through use of the conferences and print newsletters. ANA usually gives journals and

posts to the members through their website and emails. The journals not only contain updates on

the policy change and practice change but also updates the nurses on the new advancements and

new developments and findings. In the conferences the members share their experiences and also

gets a chance to be updated on the healthcare changes and developments. Through its 54

constituent member associations the ANA reaches to their members and give them the trainings

remain updated (Schmidt, 2018).

Opportunities for Continuing Education and Professional Development .

The American Nurses Association has a wealth of resources from webinars to on-demand

courses that assists the members in their education advancement in their area of practice. The

organization has a whole range of certifications and tools that support e-learning of their members.

The ANA offers great opportunities to the members for exploring their personal interests through

their courses helping the members to develop and become experts in their area of practice

(American Nurses Association 2020). The ANA variety of courses that the members can access

are discounted and members can afford to advance their career goals without much strain. Their

education topic areas are the work environment, clinical, organizational excellence, certification

review as well as leadership training.

The organization offers discounted certification as well as courses where one can

physically attend the classes or opt to do e-learning as they continue with their day to day works.

The organization also sponsors and also helps the member in financing their education

advancement through their welfare and economic welfare platform (Schmidt, 2018). The

organization has also escalated their online courses so as they cover almost all the educational

advanced. The ANA also encourages authors of the nursing books and journals so as to expand

their library for the members to access the materials for their career advancement and development.
