Introduction
The health-illness continuum describes how well-being is more than merely the absence
of illness. However, it also combines the individual's emotional and mental health. Put forth

by Travis and Ryan; the health-illness continuum also describes illness and health along a
continuum, which comprises of high levels of poor health and disease that also includes death,
on the end of the continuum. Moreover, in the middle of the continuum, neither illness nor
health is portrayed. The middle zone of the continuum is also denoted as neutral zone.
Typically, when patients are successfully treated, they move from illness towards health along
the continuum and from health towards disease due to trauma or infection. The purpose of the
health-illness continuum is to educate individuals to avoid predisposing factors and protect
against premature death and pathology (Buckwitz et al. 2020)
Health-Illness Importance to Health and Patient Care
The continuum's significant importance is that the continuum focuses not only on the
treatment plan of a person in case of any disease but also on an individual's general well-being
(Buckwitz et al. 2020). During the past era, there were cases where individuals suffered from
extreme emotional states. There was much attention paid towards it; this was risky and could
potentially result in detrimental consequences. The model below represents illness-wellness.

Based on the model, the left side indicates illness, while the right side indicates
wellness. However, the middle point (comfort zone) of the model signifies the absence of any
disease, the health point, or joint health condition. The point (comfort zone) is when an
individual is considered physically stable and not emotionally or mentally. Moreover, the
model's right side also represents awareness, education that the individual possesses, and
growth. Individuals who are mentally and physically stable and well equipped with all attention
and knowledge will always lie on the right side, indicating health perfection for both mental
and physical perspectives. The model is convenient to adequately deliver patient care as it
enables them to have an insight into their state through this wellness and treatment paradigm.
Relation of Human-Illness Continuum to Value, Dignity, and Promotion of Human
Flourishing
Health-illness continuum is an essential tool that can be utilized by the health care
providers in the treatment of patients that helps to maintain the value and dignity of the patients.
The heal-illness tool helps to create a connection between the provider and the patient. By
observing the patient's privacy and elegance, the health care provider can establish a significant
relationship. The Health-illness continuum enables the providers to treat patients rather than
the illness; this is achieved when health provider discuses the patient on how they want to be
invested and how they like the doctors to be involved (Santini, 2020). However, by

understanding the wellness-illness continuum, the provider will impact a patient's positive outlook, enhancing well-being and health. However, the doctor will advise patients on the
necessary actions they are supposed to take to enable them to move towards the model's right
side. Besides, the patient will also benefit from the education provided, and the health care
provider will have an easy way of elaborating the patient's awareness. Moreover, the doctor
will find it easy to explain to the patient the conditions that contribute to the worsening states
of health, for instance, disability, signs, and symptoms of illness (Santini, 2020). The health

provider will understand that the patient's point is not as important as where the patient is
facing. When patients are viewed as people, dignity, and respect flow naturally.
Reflection on Personal State of Health and the Health-Illness Continuum
Workouts, exercise, healthy eating, and our daily activities define the wellness of our
daily lifestyle. I am obese and overweight. My behaviors have contributed significantly to my
current situation; however, what I eat and my actions join in yielding my emotional, mental,
and physical developments. Being overweight, I cannot stand for a long time due to pains in
my heels. I continuously feed on American cuisine, having proteins, milk, and nuts. Besides
having a walk of about an hour a day and going to the gym to do some exercises, my current
weight loss efforts are not working; this has negatively affected my emotions and mind. I hate
my conditions and feel oppressed whenever I am in public. Based on the wellness-illness
continuum, I am towards the left side; that is, illness and my health conditions do not want
(Joyner et al. 2020).
Resources Supporting Wellness
Being overweight and obese, I am mentally, physically, and emotionally affected by
the condition. Similarly, I am not able to stand for a long time as a result of pains in my heels.
I hate myself to the point that I do not want to be in public. I feel awkward whenever I am in
public to feel my dress code is disgusting. Additionally, I was previously unaware, and I had
no idea about contributing to my well-being helpfully, but now having knowledge, I am well
educated and aware. Moreover, I have adapted and learned several ways, like feeding on
appropriate diets on my weight and health. I have also developed a routine schedule for my
exercise and workouts procedures that will improve weight loss; this will significantly improve
my mental, physical and emotional condition and, no doubt, move towards wellness in a health-
illness continuum.
