Counseling is a learning process that is a contracted interaction between the client and the
counselor. This contracted interaction provides an opportunity for the client to work in better,
resourceful, and satisfying ways. The counselor provides an opportunity to the client to work in

counselors become the consumers of research, they can produce new information, and the
counselors can effectively evaluate the interventions and treatments (Erford, 2014).
To improve the health outcomes of a client, the Scientific-Practitioner model brings
together two different roles of a practitioner as well as of a scientist. The field of counseling
depends on the clinical practices as well as on the research evidence. Thus, the counselors should
be involved in the newer researches relevant to the field. Another concern in the field is the time
limit. Counselors are expected to set goals and implement the required intervention in an
already-set time frame. They are expected to obtain proof of the implemented interventions in
the same time frame. The counselor can employ the scientific practitioner model here to utilize
newer research data for the better development of goals and interventions. SP model helps the
counselor to set a time limit and evaluate the outcomes at the same time.
Research is an important aspect of the profession as research data-models are being
employed in the field at a frequent rate and the clients feel more secure when they are aware that
the interventions are evidence-based. Cognitive complexity is increasing competency in the field.
To acquire additional skills, counselors need to do research. These additional skills can help the
counselors to blend interventional, analytical, and communication skills to attain desirable
results. All these skills can be acquired if a counselor engages in research and newer practices of
the field. Research involves the documentation of information, interpretation, and systematic
review to increase knowledge. A counselor can perform research in various ways. The research

self-defined ways to be the members of a broader society. To develop an insight into the
concerns and issues of the client, the counselor needs to make them feel secured and safe and
that is why counselors need to be aware of the legal and ethical considerations relevant to the
field of counseling. Research is a vital part of the counseling field as it provides data on the
effectiveness and impacts of the counseling. In the field, quantitative research has helped the
most as it helps the counselor in identifying the values and new practices. Dominated research
can make a counselor confident about the effectiveness of the treatment.
In the field of counseling, quantitative research is not new (Berrios, 2006) . The
profession of counseling needs to pay close attention to the research of newer practices.
Providing proof that the interventions being used are empirically sound and well researched
gives efficacy to the field. The main focus of the counseling practices and training is evidence-
based counseling therapy. The most appropriate model is the scientific-practitioner model. The
reason is that this model incorporates research training and practical clinical skills to make
counseling therapy a comprehensive learning process. The scientific-practitioner model has
become an important component for preparing competent counselors and practitioners even
though the model is being employed in clinical practices. As part of the counselor’s daily
practices, this model encourages the counselor to deal with the clients with confidence and
empirically-evident interventions. In this field, the counselors are only able to develop the best
practice processes when they are generated from the theories proved in multiple types of
research. There are three main key roles that this model plays in the field of counseling. The
can be carried out on the client’s background as well as on the field’s background. The counselor
can also research the newer scientific practices that are being appreciated in the field worldwide.
To ensure the effectiveness of the therapy, the counselor should research the client’s background.
In this case, if any issue emerges, research would allow the counselor to change the chosen

therapy for the client. A counselor can also change the theoretical belief that was previously
implied on the client in case of any disturbing information regarding the emotions and thoughts
of the client. This can be analyzed through psychoanalysis on the client’s behavior.
Psychoanalysis or research on the client’s behavior entails conditioning, experiences, and a
person’s condition that can provide betterment to previously held treatments.
To conclude, research is as much important in the field of counseling as in any other
profession. The profession would not be effective if it sticks to a single therapy that was being
implemented for centuries. Many evidence-based models are being employed in the field to
promote better counseling approaches.
