many other municipalities and entities (S, M. C, 2018). On the west, Scottsdale is bordered by Phoenix, Paradise Valley and unincorporated Maricopa County land. Carefree is along the western boundary, and shares Scottsdale's northern boundary with the Tonto National Forest. To the south Scottsdale is bordered by Tempe. The southern boundary is also occupied by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which extends along the eastern boundary, which also borders Fountain Hills, the McDowell Mountain Regional Park and more unincorporated Maricopa County land..

The city is in the Salt River Valley, or the "Valley of the Sun," in the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has an area of 183.92 square miles (476.4 km2), of which 184.2 square miles (477 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (0.12%) is water (S, M. Geopolitical

Negative impacts of federal and state laws High dependency on tourism and being politically inclined to only focus on that level of tourism Inexpensive cost of foreign and domestic labor Global economic competition

Because studies show that by the year 2025, eighty percent of manufactured goods will be made in a country different from where they are consumed, we should expect major changes in the global supply chains and trade patterns and respond by developing new strategies to compete in the global economy (HALL, 2005). Scottsdale, Arizona thus needs to pursue public/private partnerships that identify the “new” business opportunities and actively engage in a marketing campaign to these new trade partners. Inexpensive foreign labor can both benefit and harm Arizona, but is a reality in this global economy. Inexpensive foreign labor in other countries allows those countries to provide goods at lower cost—but this may move some jobs out of the state. However, foreign workers employed within the United States are necessary for certain employment that American workers may not be willing, able or available to perform. While encouraging economic symbiosis, however, Scottsdale, Arizona must be mindful of, and sensitive to, cultural differences between the United States and Mexico, as well as environmental constraints related to the Sonoran desert (HALL, 2005). This is so since there is a lot of friction between the two regions. Generally speaking, the city’s’ ability to interact with foreign countries is controlled by federal law. Unfortunately, laws written in Washington, D.C. do not always account for the particular concerns of border states like Arizona, and thus have unintended, adverse consequences.

economic impact of over $3.1 billion (HALL, 2005). The city of Scottsdale is tied with Atlanta for fourth, after New York City, Las Vegas, and Chicago respectively, as having the most AAA Five-Diamond hotels and resorts in the United States. In 2015, AAA bestowed four such properties in Scottsdale with the highest honor: The Phoenician, The Canyon Suites, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, and the Fairmont Princess Resort and Spa (SCOTTSDALE, 2015). The region's year-round warm weather and abundant sunshine is a major factor in Scottsdale's tourism appeal. In particular, during the winter, thousands of tourists and retirees from the midwest, the northeast, and as far away as Canada (known locally as "snowbirds"), flood the area with visits from brief to long term. With these many sources of revenue, the town ends up being able to highly benefit from the tourism interactions and foreign revenue.
