Ethics can be described as a code or system based on obligations and universal
moral duties that show how someone should behave in his or her line of duty.
On the other hand, values are more of core belief guiding our actions and
choices and dene the purpose of our existence, (Radelet, 2016). In the current
society, it has become difcult to address the concern as well as questions
involving ethics and ethical behavior.
Value of ethics
Values are used to guide workers and agencies. In law enforcement values may
differ depending on the function. Some of the values in law enforcement
include integrity, professionalism, respect, and accountability. Values have an
impact on the decisions that we make in our personal and professional life,
(Meese, et al., 2015). Values guide us towards ethical decisions and ethical
behavior. When a police ofcer behaves ethically they are able to gain the
community trust and support, they earn respect, and they establish a high
professional and personal reputation. The oath serves as a groundwork for
instilling ethical behavior. In situations where making an ethical decision may
be difcult police ofcers take a certain test to help them make ethical
decisions. These test may include the media test and gut test. The gut test
mainly relies on a person's beliefs and instincts while the media test requires
the police ofcer to answer questions like is the decision better and less
harmful.
Consequences
Police misconduct mainly involves the violation of constitutional rights,
unethical behavior or illegal actions. Examples of police misconduct include
fraud, dishonesty, and abuse of authority. Disciplinary rules specify the
unacceptable level of misconduct. Disciplinary actions include the termination

of criminal prosecution or verbal warning depending on the level of
misconduct. When a Police Ofcer abuses his power, it is called unethical
police practices. "Police" offense is a broad term used to portray police
disgrace and severity, which integrate violation of state and government laws,
the infringement of a person's established rights. Excessive power, false
imprisons, and detainment, serious allegation, and wrongful passing are
additionally used to characterize unethical police practices. There are many
consequences for the police ofcers regarding the use of their power against
resistive subjects.
There are mainly ve charges a police ofcer can face for violating its ethics.
First one is "Federal criminal charges" in which the nes can be as high as
$250,000. Second is "state criminal charges" which are the separate state
correctional codes that implement: assault, homicide, and so forth and
punishment for these are a prison, (MacVean, 2018). "Federal civil charges" is
the third consequences a police ofcer can compel to pay his adversary's
lawyer charges. So regardless of the possibility that the compensatory harms
are moderately little, the legitimate expenses the offended party has brought
about can be vast.
Next is "State civil charges" as in government court, the legal implications are
nancial. Be that as it may, not at all like in state courts, the jury pool will
comprise of nearby nationals, so how the group sees a police ofcer will
assume an extensive part by the way his activities seen. Juries are just human,
and much of the time it relies upon how they consider and see their ofcers,
(Caldero, 2017). Last is "Departmental charges" here, contingent upon how the
organization works or potentially how union contract is set up, a police ofcer
can be ned, suspended, downgraded or even let go for his activities in the city

or the correctional facility. Charges will be that he abused at least one of his
organization's rules, controls, strategies or methodology.
Police Ethics Discussion
In this discussion, I understood the various standards of ethics in police
training. Throughout the ofcer's vocation, moral preparation should proceed. I
was also able to understand some of the consequence of violating
constitutional rights as well as unethical behavior. In addition, I was exposed to
some of the critical thinking tests that police ofcers engage in when making
decisions. These tests include the media test and gut test.
Training to Prevent Unethical Behavior
There are a few approaches to prevent unethical behavior in the case of police
ofcers, including the arrangement of the commission that will handle the
issue of mixed up distinguishing proof, untrustworthy conduct and unfortunate
behavior in the Criminal Justice eld; to apply the whistleblowing practice; and
to create powerful hostile to delement strategy. Training in the methodology
based approach was compelling in enhancing the basic leadership skill of
ofcers. The program was found to have a positive effect on both the ethical
substance and handling of choices by the ofcers in the treatment gathering.
Extremely, ofcers in the treatment aggregate were more ready to apply an
organized critical thinking process after the preparation contrasted with their
partners. However, they just tended to adjust distinctive good esteems in
'higher stakes' of ethical dilemmas.
