W H AT I T I S

Air conditioning (AC) systems cause the

greatest utility expense during the peak

times of Summer and Winter, which in turn

increases financial hardships on residents. It

is clear that we are in need of a smarter

system that is much more efficient and

tailored to each customer. Our objective is to

design an easy to install system that reduces

power consumption by 50%.

H O W I T W I L L W O R K

The system controls the amount of airflow

provided via the vents to a given room, which

will lead to a system that only focuses on

rooms that are occupied and is tailored to

customer’s needs, thus reducing power

consumption. Microcontrollers in

conjunction with servos open and close the

grates, and each of these microcontrollers

communicates wirelessly with the central

hub. Each grate will be equipped with a

temperature sensor, and each room’s

temperature is transmitted to the central

hub.

Our system consists of two main subsystems;

the air vent and the thermostat.

The air vent is designed to be easy to install.

Each vent comes equipped with a battery, a

temperature sensor, a servo, and a control

board.

Raspberry 3 will act as our central hub. It will

be used to send and receive signals from the

vents, control the temperature in each room,

and will be used as a wifi gateway so that a

phone can be used to control the system

remotely.

By

communicating with the vents using Wifi, the

batteries attached to the vents would not last

two weeks! However, With the use of an ultra

low power microcontroller such as the msp430

and LoRa communication technology in our

control board for the vents, the battery life

becomes greater than one year.
