The Internet of things is a computing concept that is used to describe the connective and networking features of
the thing. It has become part of our lives, and it is evident in home appliances, security, and security systems
that are often connected to the Internet for effortless utility. The Internet of things has gained popularity and
become one of the most important technologies of the 21st century because it has made it possible to have
seamless communication between individuals, processes, and things. The Internet of things creates
information about connected objects, analyses them, and makes decisions. It also increases efficiency by saving
money and resources and lightens the workload through the use of automation. The Internet of things has
revolutionized the field of technology; therefore, it is important to discuss the explanation of the Internet of
things, its impacts, benefits, and how it was affected by the pandemic.
2 EXPLANATION AND HISTORY OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS
Explanation
3 THE INTERNET OF THINGS IS A TERM USED TO REFER TO THE GROUP OF PHYSICAL
OBJECTS EMBEDDED WITH SENSORS THAT HAVE A PROCESSING ABILITY, SOFTWARE,
AND TECHNOLOGIES THAT CONNECT AND EXCHANGE DATA WITH OTHER DEVICES AND
SYSTEMS THROUGH THE USE OF THE INTERNET OTHER COMMUNICATION NETWORKS.
The Internet of things has evolved in the past two decades because of the convergence of several technologies
such as commodity sensors and power systems that are embedded (Dustdar et al., 2019). However, there has
been concern about the risks which are associated with the use of the Internet of things, such as privacy and

security. But the government has set up several measures such as developing international and local standards,
guidelines, and regulatory frameworks.
History The idea of developing smart devices started as early as 1982 at Carnegie Melon University. Students
from this university modified the school's Coca-Cola vending machine to report its contents through a network
that they had developed. The 1990s saw further development of the Internet of things, where John Romkey
connected a toaster with the Internet. 4 THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ALSO
DEVELOPED A WEB CAMERA PROTOTYPE TO MONITOR THE AMOUNT OF COFFEE
AVAILABLE IN THE COFFEE POT AVAILABLE IN THEIR COMPUTER LABS (WANG ET AL.,
2020). The web camera would take photos of the coffee pot in three minutes and send the pictures to local
computers. 2 IN THE 21ST CENTURY, SEVERAL MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS PAVED THE WAY
FOR THE FUTURE OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS. In the year 2000, LG electronics developed a
refrigerator connected to the Internet that allowed individuals to shop online and make video calls. 2 IN
2005, A SMALL RABBIT-SHAPED ROBOT WAS DEVELOPED WHICH WAS ABLE TO MAKE
WEATHER FORECASTS REPORT THE LATEST NEWS AND CHANGES IN THE STOCK
MARKET.
Potential Impact of IoT
The first impact is that I have made it possible for individuals to monitor data. It has made it possible for
individuals to access more data than what would have previously been collected. The second impact is the ease
of access. The Internet of things has made it possible for persons to obtain the required information in real-
time regardless of the place where an individual is through the use of a smart device and internet connection
(Hossein et al., 2020). It has made it easier for persons to book tickets online, access information easily, and be
informed about the latest scientific research. Thirdly, it has increased the speed of operation. The Internet of
things has made it possible for a lot of data to flow, making it easier for persons to complete multiple tasks at
amazing speeds. It has made automation effortless make it easier for smart industries to automate repetitive
tasks, which has allowed individuals to use their time and effort on challenging and important things. The IoT
has also evolved and improved automation and control. The ability of physical objects to be connected and
controlled digitally and centrally through a wireless technology structure has made it possible to control and
automate their processes. These machines can communicate and provide a faster and timely output. Although
it has several positive impacts, there are also negative impacts of the Internet of things. One of the negative
impacts is ta to privacy and security. The Internet of things transmits a lot of data, increasing the risk of losing
privacy through cyber-attacks (Aljeraisy et al., 2021). The other negative impact is that it has resulted in the
loss of employment. Unskilled workers have lost their employment due to automation in organizations. The
automation of daily activities has resulted in fewer human resources requirements, especially for workers and
staff who are less educated.
How an Organization has benefited from IoT
One of the organizations that have benefited from the Internet of things is Amazon. One of how the
organization has benefited from the Internet of Things is that of home automation and order placement.
Amazon has developed Alexa, a virtual assistant that allows amazons customers to order products sold on
amazon prime. The second way that amazon has benefited from IoT is in fulfillment centers, advanced
technology, and man/machine symbiosis. The organization uses human and machine symbiosis in its
fulfillment centers (Pierleoni et al., 2019). The use of IoT has used robots to rearrange shelves or carry them to
workers who retrieve the goods for packing and restock them. Amazon controls the robots by using a central
computer and navigation through markers on the ground. The organization has also been highly automated,

where vision systems recognize products when they are unpacked. The automated system also allows the
organization to sort packed goods into batches destined for different customers. The last way the organization
has benefited from IoT is in delivery solutions. Amazon uses drones to reduce the delivery time of products to
customers ensuring that the customer's needs are addressed on time.
Impact of Pandemic on IoT The first impact of the pandemic on IoT is that it increased the demand and use of
Internet of Things devices. During the pandemic, the use of conference tools such as zoom started to be used
frequently to allow individuals to communicate remotely. Its use also increased the health sector, where
healthcare professionals started using telehealth. The covid-19 pandemic resulted in the extensive use of track
and trace solutions due to the disruption of the supply chain. The other impact of the pandemics is that they
made supply chain and manufacturing capacities more flexible and resilient (Singh et al., 2020). The last
impact is that it increased the use of drones. During the pandemic, drones found new uses, especially social
distancing rules. Drones began to be used for medical deliveries, especially in China, where they were used to
deliver medical samples and medicines related to the Covid-19 virus. Their increased use is also evident where
they were used for spraying for disinfection purposes. 5 HUAWEI CONVERTED MORE THAN 2500
ROBOTS AND DRONES INTO DISINFECTANT SPRAYERS.

PROCESSING TO CONNECT AND EXCHANGE DATA WITH OTHER DEVICES AND SYSTEMS

MACHINE. The Internet of Things has had several impacts, both positive and negative. The positive impacts
include ease of access, increased automation, improved monitoring, and communication. The negative impacts
include loss of employment and security and safety concerns. Several organizations have benefited by using the
Internet of Things, such as Amazon. The IoT has benefited the organization through automation, drones for
delivery, and the customer making orders. However, the pandemic has positively impacted the Internet of
Things, where the world embraced its applications.
