I chose Anxiety to speak about. I have dealt with Anxiety and Depression since I left the Military. Currently, I see a therapist once a month, take medication regularly and take step back when I am feeling overwhelmed. The World Health Organization (2017) says that anxiety disorder is a prevalent, common mental health disorder that affects one in every five people. Because of this, the disorder tends to receive less attention when compared to mental disorders, such as psychotic conditions and substance use disorders. Moreover, anxiety is less reported in the media than depression and suicide attempts, which reduces the help-seeking behaviors of patients suffering from anxiety (Parekh, 2018). There are a few different types of psychotherapies used to treat Anxiety. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is known to be the most popular of them all because this type of psychotherapy helps people who suffer from anxiety and depression disorders because it focuses on three main components: cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, and mindfulness-based therapies. CBT intervention aims to improve mental health by teaching people different ways of thinking, behaving, and reacting to anxiety-producing and fearful situations. CBT can also help people to develop coping strategies, learn and practice social skills, all of which is vital for treating social anxiety disorder (NIHM, 2018).
