Maintaining Academic Integrity

Reply to this classmate

It should be noted that integrity is important for every professional nurse considering that it defines their character and precedes them and ensures that one executes all of their professional duties and upholds their responsibilities to their patients and their employer. Integrity represents moral principles, honesty and sincerity, helps create a better work environment, inspires others to be better, and has a positive impact on patient outcomes (Iacono, 2019).

There is no denying the fact that maintaining academic integrity is important because it is underpinned by honesty, trust and respect. It is important to acknowledge who created or developed new ideas or research. Knowledge is created by many people, and it is important to acknowledge each person’s contribution. Copying someone else’s work does not enable one to learn anything. Academic integrity is important to lay down a good foundation for the student, so they can follow the same principles for the rest of their life. Integrity leads to trust-building among colleagues and friends (Holden, Norris & Kuhlmeier, 2021).

There are many reasons why students choose to falsify their work. Reasons range from genuine lack of knowledge to outright dishonorable intentions. Collectively, the most frequently stated reasons students choose to falsify their work include desire to get a good grade, fear of failing, procrastination or poor time management, disinterest in the assignment, and belief that they will not get caught. It should be noted that none of these instances are acceptable reasons to plagiarize, cheat, or commit other acts of academic dishonesty.  Students who choose to plagiarize or cheat give themselves an unfair advantage on assignments and disrespect the hard work of others in the class.  It is important that students understand that while there are reasons one might choose to plagiarize or cheat, instructors are interested in evaluating each student's own, original work, not in evaluating the work done by others (Holden, Norris & Kuhlmeier, 2021).

I must mention that at the moment, I have no major challenges with APA formatting. I am able to cite sources, format headings and subheadings, format in-text citations, and format reference pages without any major challenges. I must also mention that in the event that I experience any challenges going forward, I will use the APA Publication Manual to address them.
