A brief description of requirements for certification and licensure in your state, province, or locale for the addictions profession you chose. 

 

            My hope is to work in the substance abuse community. I would like to connect with a non-profit Christian organization, preferably working with the homeless. As a Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC-I) in Oregon, it requires a year or 1,000 hours of supervised experience in AD counseling, 150 hours of education in Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (treatment programs) related courses, with passing a National Certified Addiction Certificate (Human Services Edu., 2021). Increasing to a CADC-II requires a bachelor’s degree in counseling or related field is 4,000 hours supervised experience in AD counseling,  330 hours coursework, 150 hours of education in AODA, including passing examination in the NCAC (Human Services Edu., 2021).

 To become a CADC-I, I must follow the requirements above through the Mental Health & Addiction Certification Board of Oregon, a verifying letter of sobriety, complete Code of Conduct (which is anonymity, build report, educate, and support client towards goals) (Addiction Counseling, 2021), complete application, and pass the examination (Counseling Degree Guide, 2021). 

 

Describe one competency you believe you have developed as part of your participation in this course 

           

This course has been a wonderful challenge, a challenge that I am so grateful for. I am a recovering alcoholic and have eleven years of sobriety. Going back to school was a huge leap of faith I took, to give hope to those that suffer from addiction. The competency that I have developed in this course is increased knowledge in addiction assessments. From the beginning of this course, I have increased my knowledge in principles for ethical practice, the different multidisciplinary teams that go into an assessment, and models of addiction. Additionally, terminology, interview strategies, and considerations of assessment tools. This knowledge has formed a foundation for me to build on towards my goal of becoming a CADC. 

             One competency you believe you need to develop to work as a professional in the field of addiction.

       I want to increase my skills in all the components of the competency model (SAMHA, 2017). This model includes eight hubs of the transdisciplinary foundations, for addiction professional's practice. They include clinical evaluation, treatment planning, referral, counseling, professional and ethical responsibilities, service coordination, documentation, client, family, and community education (SAMHA, 2017). The four transdisciplinary foundation basics every specialist should have understanding are addiction, treatment knowledge, application to practice, and professional readiness (SAMHS, 2017). 

One personal competency that I would like to develop is becoming a better writer to document thorough assessment reports. I believe that continued education here at Walden and using resources like the Writing Center will help support this area. Mastering each of these dimensions will help me be a valuable addiction professional in the future.

Then, describe one competency you believe you have developed as part of your participation in this course and one competency you believe you need to develop to work as a professional in the field of addiction.

Requirements for certification and licensure in your state.

In the state of Nevada there are different requirements for a certification and licensure to be an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. In order to be certified you must hold either a Bachelor’s degree in a field of social science with 18 semester units in addictions or a Master’s degree in a field of social science with 12 semester units in addictions. With both the Bachelors and Masters degree, you must also complete 1,500 hours of supervised counseling and pass both a written IC&RC ADC examination and oral examination with 70% or better. (Alcohol & Drug Counselors Licensure, 2021)

In order to be licensed as an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, you must be a hold a Master’s degree in a field of social science and be either a currently licensed MFT, LCSW, or CPC. From there you can complete 2,000 of supervised clinical experience. If you have a Masters degree but are not currently licensed as a MFT, LCSW, or CPC you will need have comprehensive coursework in clinical mental health including diagnosis of mental health disorders and complete 2,000 hours of supervised alcohol and drug counseling and 2,000 hours of mental health counseling. One competency you believe you have developed as part of your participation in this course.

One competency I believe I have developed as part of my participation in this course is an improved understanding of addictions assessments and evaluations and how to make a more throughout referral report. In my current line of work as a Victim Service Coordinator, I often make several referrals to other departments or agencies for my clients to get further assistance. I now have a better understanding of what occurs when I refer my clients to substance abuse counselors and their role in the process.  

One competency you believe you need to develop to work as a professional in the field of addiction.

Once Competency I believe I will need the improve on to work as a professional in the field of addictions would be which assessment fits best for the client I am working with at that time. Each client is going to be different and one assessment may work for one client while another might not respond the same to the same assessment. Identifying which assessment to use is vital in this process and I feel like that will come in time and practice actually working with clients to know which one works best for them and I.
