ABAB studies is a time series design. There are two parts to this kind of study. First, baseline information is gathered, followed by a measurement of the effect after an application of a treatment. Second, there is a measurement of when the treatment is removed, followed by measuring the change after reapplying treatment. In other words, as the name of the study states; A represents the measurement at baseline, B represents the measurement with a treatment, second A represents the measurement when treatment is withdrawn, and second B represents the measurement of when treatment is reapplied (AllPsych, 2020).
To analyze the data in this scenario, one could consider ABAB studies, but that is if all four steps are conducted. We are only given information about assigning random adult insomniacs to receive either 4 or 8 grams of the sleeping pill. If a measurement was conducted prior to applying the sleeping pill, another after administration of dosage, then again maybe another night without applying the dosage, then the next night measuring how the same random insomniacs sleep when the dosage is reapplied, then the ABAB study can be useful. Yet again, we do not get that information here. Although, this is similar to A/B testing.
A/B testing is the study between two variables to conclude which one is technically better. In this scenario, we are testing whether random insomniacs who take 4 grams of sleeping pill have better or worse sleep than random insomniacs who take 8 grams of sleeping pill. Z-tests are a way to compare means with normality and a known standard deviation. T-tests can also be used to compare means between two groups and standard values (Wikipedia, 2023).

The ABAB design is the intervention after the return to the baseline to judge the strength of the intervention and determine if there is a functional relationship between A and B (ABA, 2023). The ABAB design is a great way to measure the behavior effects in a study by introducing the intervention, taking it away and reintroducing it again. By doing this we can see how the variable effects the study and how it is effected when taken away.
ABAB
A- Baseline period and data collection
B- Intervention
A- Removal of the intervention, back to baseline
B- Introduction of the intervention again
Other test that can be used would be a t-test or analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare the means of the 2 dosage groups.

The Chi Square test of Independence would be the best test to use in the design created by Dr. Bill Board. The Chi Square test of independence is designed to understand if there is a statistically significant relationship between the categorical variables that interact with one another. Dr. Board designed a 2x2 design where each variable interacts with each other. All variables could have interaction with one another and the Chi Square test of independence would be most useful in testing this.
