There are ethical and legal obligations in place to help protect the psychologists while also protecting the clients. Dr. Jones has ethical and legal obligations which can be found in Section 3 of the APA Code of Ethics which states that there cannot be any unfair discrimination or harassment due to ethnicity, culture, or faith. Ethically, he has additional requirements within the General Principles of the Ethics Code in Principle E: Respect for People’s Rights and Dignity. Dr. Jones has to respect cultural differences and should eliminate his bias and not condone activities based on his prejudices. Dr. Jones should be “committed to critical thinking and the process of self-examination so that such prejudices or biases (and the assumptions on which they are based) may be evaluated in the light of available scientific data, standards of the profession, and traditions of cooperation and mutual respect (Counseling Psychology Model Training Values Statement Addressing Diversity, 2009, p 642). Dr. Jones’ bias may cause a cognitive and emotional response which may be problematic in how he evaluates and treats this client (Neal, Brodsky, 2016). Dr. Jones may want to take time to learn more about his personal bias and how to correctly handle it. He may do this by reading professional literature on the subject or even observing others who are able to work with and manage their own personal biases successfully (Neal, Brodsky, 2016). This will allow him to provide the best care to his client despite any personal bias he may be facing.

Fisher (2017) I would think Principle D and Principle E apply to this situation. Principle D states that all psychologist should treat their clients fairly with proper access to treatment and knowledge that they have learned (Fisher, 2017). While, Principle E is having the respect for their client’s background (Fisher, 2017). As a professional you need to be aware that you will have clients of all different cultures and backgrounds. If you feel for some reason that you will not be able to be professional and provide the client with the respect they deserve you will need to recommend them to another psychologist so they can get the help they need. Your training and education should prepare you for these challenges. You are not here for their culture or background but to assist them through issues they are having. You will need to check your bias at the door.
