In North Carolina, Nurse Practitioners are not required to adhere to a specific regulation; however, nurse practitioners and supervising physicians must define the operational responsibilities in a Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA). The rules may vary based on the type of patients, frequency of diagnosis made, case complexity, available emergency services to the practice, and if the nurse practitioner is a new graduate, or they are seasoned. Although the CPA is used as a written code of rules, they are not mandatory (Logic, n.d.)
How do you get certified and licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in your state? Psychiatric -Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMH NP) must take the board certification examination. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) provides the test when the graduates complete all the required documentation. If they pass the exam, they will receive Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner- Board Certified (PMH NP-BC) credential. This certification is acceptable for five years, and PMH NP can maintain and renew their license after meeting the renewal requirements (ANCC, 2022).
What is the application process for certification in your state? Graduated individuals must first apply online and pay the examination fee to apply for the initial application. The next step they must send the following required documentation via mail or email:
1- The validation of the education form signed by the school faculty.
2- GAP Analysis form.
3- Final official transcript (must come directly from the school via a hard copy or through electronic transcript submission services).
4- Individuals who have received an authorization to test (ATT) notice may self-schedule their test at a Prometric Testing Center (ANCC, 2022).

How does your state define the scope of practice of a nurse practitioner? North Carolina board of nursing outlined the nurse practitioners (NPs) scope of practice according to NPs' knowledge and skills based on academic preparation, board certification, and competencies. NPs' scope of practice includes promoting and maintaining health, preventing illness and disability, and diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic illnesses. They also must support and assist patients and their families and prescribe therapeutic procedures, tests, and medications. NPs must evaluate situations that require consultation with other healthcare providers and specialists when needed and evaluate the treatment outcomes (Logic, n.d.)
How do you get a DEA license?
Everyone who makes, allocates, hands out, or participates in controlled substance research must initially register with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS) to receive a DEA license. These individuals must renew their licenses by applying and paying the fee yearly (NC DHSS, n.d.).
Does your state have a prescription monitoring program (PMP)? North Carolina has a program called North Carolina Controlled Substances Reporting System (NC CSRS), which monitors schedule II, III, IV, and V controlled substances. The reporting must occur daily, and information must include the administration and distribution of Naloxone. All prescribers and dispensers must submit a request for the patient before prescribing the controlled substance and every three months if the substance continues in the patient's treatment plan. Law enforcement must have a court order to request data on a patient from CSRS (NC DHSS, n.d.).

As a board-certified nurse practitioner, you can prescribe schedule II-V substances according to your scope of practice, academic training, and national certification in North Carolina.
