RELIABILITY MANAGEMENT

Task 1

Instructions:

1) Based on the list of topics given below, choose any one topic for this assignment.

2) Formulate a research study framework that consist of the following steps:

a) Study from the literature about the reliability characteristic and its major issues in developing and implementing application for the organization.

b) Develop a list of issues that supposed to be used as an alert during this development environment.

c) Conclude your research study by indicating that the development and implementation guarantee reliability of the application.

3) Produce a research paper which is based on your findings.

4) Present your research findings in a Journal Paper format, consisting of NOT more than 8 pages, excluding references.

Topics:

2) Evaluating major issues regarding Reliability Management for Online Application of Selected Private Learning Institution in Malaysia for understanding Industrial liability.

3) Evaluating major issues regarding Reliability Management for Multi-user Application of Selected Small Medium Industries in Malaysia for understanding Industrial liability.

4) Evaluating major issues regarding Reliability Management for Cloud-based Application of Selected Mass Media Company in Malaysia for understanding Industrial liability.

5) Evaluating major issues regarding Reliability Management for Mobile Hybrid Application of Selected Non-Government Organization in Malaysia for understanding Industrial liability.

Task 2

The Case Study:

A small group of social media strategists, XYZ Resources is considering to engage ABC Tech, a newly established medium-sized cloud service provider to assist them in managing the hosting and operations of their web-based systems.

Among the services required by XYZ are:

1. To setup TWO dedicated cloud servers, where one is used for Primary Operation Services and another for Standby Operation Services which is mirrored from the primary server.

2. To establish a ‘full backup system’ for the above setup.

3. To setup a ‘Disaster Recovery Unit’ supported by several standard machines within XYZ premises.

4. To setup a Security Control System, supported primarily by firewalls.

· ABC must comply with the statutory security standards.

· The above information system infrastructure should be supported with adequate warranties.

· ABC should be able to present their credentials and a range of services provided. ABC is expected to produce references (or testimonials) on reliability and services from other clients.

· XYZ insist that the availability of the system is paramount. Therefore, Service Level Agreement should be negotiated for the benefit of its clients.

· ABC is expected to present specifications from relevant standards (for e.g. IEEE 1633-2008) for the system.

Additional Requirements;

Since XYZ is to run its critical business functions on ABC’s cloud servers, security is also a major concern. The ‘health’ of the servers and firewalls should be particularly given more attention, especially on their reliability and maintainability. These key features should be included in the system specification and contract as;

1. Guaranteed support for hardware and software including full recovery and maintenance.

2. Clear, comprehensive documentation (test, operating and maintenance instruction, program listings, program notes, etc).

Your Tasks:

You are assigned as a consultant to ABC Tech. ABC needs a comprehensive Reliability Plan with a supporting Reliability Manual to be submitted together with a Request for Proposal (RFP) to comply with XYZ’s requirements and thereafter to win the implementation contract.

Prepare a Reliability Plan which includes a Reliability Manual.

Your Reliability Plan should include the following (but not limited to):

1. A brief statement of reliability requirements.

2. The organisation for reliability.

3. The reliability activities that will be performed (design analysis, test, reports).

4. The timing of all major activities, in relation to the project development milestones.

5. Reliability management strategies for suppliers.

6. The standards, specifications and internal procedures (e.g. the reliability manual) which will be implemented, as well as cross-references to other plans such as for test, security, maintainability and quality assurance.

Your Reliability Manual should include the following (but not limited to):

1. Corporate Policy for reliability.

2. Organisation for reliability.

3. Reliability procedures in design (e.g. design analysis, components derating policy, components, materials and process selection approval and review, critical items listing, design review).

4. Reliability test procedures.

5. Reliability data collection, analysis and action system, including data from test, warranty, etc.

General Assessment Criteria:

Marks will be awarded based on constructive and comprehensive demonstration of Reliability Plan and Reliability Manual, including critical discussions of appropriate techniques relevant to the case.

Specific Assessment and Marking Criteria:

1. Demonstrating a sound knowledge and understanding of Reliability Plan and Reliability Manual in Context – (25%)

2. Ability to apply (or discuss the application of) Reliability tools, techniques and philosophies in context, with suitable analysis and interpretation – (25%)

3. Demonstrating understanding of (by providing an integrated solution for the company), and critically appraising, the impact of good practices and philosophies – (30%)

4. Report quality including referencing and bibliography (if appropriate), writing style, use of grammar and correct spelling – (20%)
