FINAL ESSAY
Your essay should include at least three bibliographic sources, of which two must be “peer-reviewed” articles or book-length studies. Each of these sources must be cited at least once in the body of the essay. Online encyclopedias (including “Wikipedia”) cannot be cited.
· Two convenient data-bases of peer-reviewed articles in the field of religion are available via the UIUC Library website. Search for “ATLA” (=American Theological Library Association) or “JSTOR” from the Online Journals and Databases tab of the Library website.
· Citations should follow the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style
Essays submitted late without an extension will be assigned a 2-pt deduction for every day they are late (including weekends). TAs have the authority to grant extensions requested at least 48 hours before the time the essays are due.
Prompt 1: New Religious Movements
Choose one of the following new religious movements from the list below. Explain how it developed historically, what relationship it has to a tradition that we have studied, and highlight/explain three of Smart’s dimensions as they appear in that movement. You should not do this by listing a one to one correspondence with Smart’s dimensions (e.g. “this movement’s new way of praying is just like the ritualistic dimension”). Rather, you should think about how all of these dimensions intertwine, overlap and feed into one another in the movement that you choose to write about.
