Religion in Sports
Sports have been in my life since I was five years old; and so, has religion. I recall going to my Saturday games in the morning, and the whole team would pray before and after the match. It really never crossed my mind how religion is so important in cultures, and some cultures – like mine – include sports. Definitely it never crossed my mind how impactful could be, until now. It is also the same reason as to why so many athletes believe, since some of them have achieved these milestones just by working hard every day, but also thanking their Gods that they have been chosen. As an example, LeBron James has done many things, but something that made an impact throughout the world was achieving his third ring. James cried, and said during the interview “I don’t know why the man above gave me the hardest road, but there’s nothing that the man above is going to do but put you in situations that you can handle, and instead of saying ‘why me?’, I said ‘this is what he wants me to do’” (CBS Sports). This shows how much someone that is, ironically, seen more as an athlete than as a human being. Religion does move masses, and sports are not left behind. There are other ways religion impacts sports than just athletes, but the watchers are also faithful and believers, which is also why many people feel identified with their favorite player. The way I see it, religion impacts everyone subconsciously.
