The Many Tales of Mulan. The tale of Mulan was originally just a short poem in the Tang dynasty, but over the centuries the story grew in length and changed in content. It was re-created in many formats: dramatic plays , modern movies, and Disney films. Each version changed significantly. In your essay, select different Mulan tales (your choice) and describe how they are different. You may choose as many modern film versions as you like, but you must choose at least one text version from the class readings. How are the characters similar or different? How are the values similar or different? How are the plots similar or different? Discuss any points of comparison that you think are important.

Basic Instructions for all rubrics. Use at least three to four quotations from the readings per page. Quotations can be a part of a sentence or a sentence or two in length. This is very important, and your grade depends in part on how well you do this. You do not need any quotations in the first or last paragraphs of the paper, but you can add them if you like.
Your grade will also depend on how thoroughly you use all relevant readings, especially the readings from the last part of the semester, and how well you show you have done those all readings.
It will also depend upon how well you follow all the guidelines in the "Paper Guidelines" document. It will also be assessed on coherence, depth, effort, the relevance of the quotations you use, your ability to demonstrate that you have done the readings and absorbed them, and your ability to apply them to the question.
Make sure your paper is a full seven pages of your own writing. Empty spaces, the title, bibliography, and unusually long quotations (and there should not be any unusually long quotes, that is, quotes longer than three sentences) do not count as "your own writing." Grades are docked one letter grade (10 points) or a fraction thereof for each page or fraction thereof that is missing.
Use only direct quotes; do not paraphrase. You can cite materials very simply by putting the abbreviated title of the book and the page number in parentheses immediately after the quotation. Examples: (AOH, p. 123), or (WBT, p. 51). You don't have to follow this citation format. You can use any method of citation, provided you provide at least the author's name and the page number for each passage.
And don't forget to include a short bibliography, regardless.
No lateness is permitted for this paper. But it can be submitted early. You can email early drafts and I can help you go over them.
