In Johns Gospel he wants to elevate Jesus this is why in Johns gospel he is not baptized but oversees it because he has no need to be baptized. In John 1: 32 when John gives his testimony he says “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33 And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” John the baptist is recognizing Jesus as the chosen one. I think John wants to elevate Jesus to be Gods equal, If John is baptizing Jesus that would be make him above Jesus but instead he has john the baptist recognize Jesus as the son of god and charge baptizing elevating his status.

The first chapter of Genesis has God creating by speaking (e.g., "Let there be light," etc.). What meaning does this add to the use of the language of "Word" in John 1?

John 1-2 The Word was first , the word present to God. God present to the word. The Word was God, in readiness for God from day on.

The word is the truth it is the reason behind every thing.  The word symbolizes the son, or Jesus. The word is the most powerful statement because once God had spoke, what he had spoke was done. Gods word is a divine entity who has unlimited power and knowledge.
