Lorna Dee Cervantes, born in San Francisco, California, in 1954, founded a press and a poetry magazine, Mango, which was chiefly devoted to Chicano literature. In 1978, she received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and in 1981, she published her first book of poems. She lives in Boulder, Colorado. “Refugee Ship,” originally written in 1974, was revised for the book, Emplumada (1981). We print the revised version.

Mama raised me without language. I’m orphaned from my Spanish name. The words are foreign, stumbling on my tongue. I see in the mirror my reflection: bronzed skin, black hair.
I feel I am a captive aboard the refugee ship. The ship that will never dock.
