Reforms of Education
Education is essential in receiving the correct understanding from a young age. Within the past 100 years, there have been a lot of changes in the education sector (Leachman et al., 2017). The changes include using state-mandated content standards in special education students' curricula and standardized testing. Within the past 100 years, a lot of research has been done to determine if the reforms used over the years have positively or negatively impacted learning development. In 2001, No Child Left Behind was passed to assess the achievements of children (Darling-Hammond,2018). Its main aim was to ensure all children are equal proficiency levels. The NCBL has changed the curriculum over the years as well as teaching strategies. These changes have impacted education and educators, leading to positive and negative aspects of learning development.
Over the last years, we have experienced positive changes in the education sector. Among the changes is using state-mandated content standards in the curriculum for special education students. The common core state standards for special students address the needs of students with special needs and disabilities. The Individual with Disability Education Act expects special-needs students to have an IndividualizedIndividualized Education Program. This program profiles measurable, standard-based goals that mirror the level of students’ skills and their education capacities. It also includes critical life skills, including critical thinking, social, and emotional skills. However, the state-mandated content standards in special education also have adverse effects. It isn't easy to create individualized, individualized Education Programs that will impact a student and still pivot on the Common Core State Standards goals. Teachers dealing with students with special needs claim that it is difficult to focus on reading and look at the students who have not mastered the skills.
Another positive aspect of change is the use of standardized testing. It is essential since most students are assessed through testing and determining the quality of a curriculum. StandardizedStandardized test scores come from an unbiased source that produces information that is used to compare to other schools( O'Leary et al., 2020). It also helps schools to assess their progress through assessment data that allows comparison performance. Even though standardized testing is essential, it has adverse effects. The most significant disadvantage is that predicting a student's score by judging their ability is easy. Some students clearly understand a subject during the assessment but cannot perform on a test with multiple choices. In addition, another disadvantage is that the scores don't prove a student's ability; hence factors of anxiety, sickness, and unawareness of the test can affect student performance.
Special education has experienced a lot of improvement within the last 100 years since all schools can now access educational programs for exceptional students. Students need a platform to generate ideas and motivate them in their learning. A collaborative training model is one of the reforms I would propose in special education. Most special education teachers leave due to the burden of the paperwork. This model enables parents and teachers to improve learning and teaching procedures and create a close working relationship.
Meanwhile, discussions between the director of education and the federation of children with special needs have shown the urge to make valuable training. This training model also has objectives such as shifting the model that complies with the outcome of the students. Another goal is to divert all resources towards creatives that bring cooperation between parents, schools, and state companies that provide educational tools.
The collaborative training model can be used to ensure parents and teachers collaborate in providing education for exceptional students. The director of education should provide training funds to train both parents and teachers in educating the students and creating a relationship that will lead to trust. Another way to ensure that it is effective is to provide less money spent on legal actions and to generate more funds to improve student outcomes. The collaborative model can be impacted by many factors like attitude, the organization's capacity, individual skills and professional efficiency. Thus, the model should ensure that students who think and learn differently are seen and given attention by creating a meaningful connection that is of importance to all sets of students.
In conclusion, reforms in education over the years have shown a positive or a negative impact on learning development. Some reforms that have impacted education include standardized testing and state-mandated content standards in the curriculum. These changes have enabled teaching and lesson delivery methods, especially for exceptional students, to be successful. Throughout the years’ students and teachers have been affected by the changes in the education sector which has developed. Therefore, numerous modifications are to be experienced over the years to keep the students motivated in their studies and have the urge to continue with education.
