Journal-s
DEC 100 – Reflective Journal Response #1
The Other Wes Moore Ch. 1 and 2 Journal Prompts
The following is a list of questions related to the assigned reading in the novel, choose one or more of these prompts (or one of your own choosing) and write a reflective journal response (at least 350 words) using the chart that follows. You must include a quotation AND its location in the novel as part of your response. You will use the chart to complete the blog assignment and then upload the finished product to Moodle.
Each reflective journal must be submitted to Moodle BEFORE class on the due date. You do not have to wait until we discuss the novel in class; you can submit it ANYTIME before the due date. Each response will be entered through the Turnitin software in Moodle, so if any part of YOUR reflection has been plagiarized or copied from the Internet or another source, you will receive a ZERO. Because this is a personal reflection, language using the first person point of view is appropriate (I, me, my, etc.).
Criteria for evaluation include thoughtfulness/ insightfulness, development, and integration of course material. (Please note that minimum effort receives a maximum grade of C-)
Possible Journal Prompts:
1. “Identity” can be defined as the ways in which an individual describes him/herself or the ways in which a person is described by society. A person can have several “identities,” such as gender, age, socioeconomic status, linguistic background, culture, religion, sexual orientation, geographic residence, nationality, creed, familial connections, and body size, just to name a few. Reflecting on what you’ve already read in The Other Wes Moore along with your TRUE Colors Personality assessment, list your different “identities.” Write the ways society (others) might perceive each of your identities, both positively and/or negatively. (For example: Identity: male, Perception: good at sports, Identity: private college student, Perception: wealthy). Pick three identities and a specific thing you can do to reinforce the positive OR confront/dispel the negative ones for each.
2. Basketball quickly becomes a getaway for Wes and his friends. What activities do you enjoy while trying to cope with difficult situations? How has your involvement in these activities helped you deal with the complexities of life? What other activities or organizations interest you at Tiffin University? What might you get involved with while a student to further explore your major/career interests? How does your involvement connect to your identity and personality?
3. How might the results of the True Colors Assessment help you excel personally and professionally? What might be some examples of strategies you could implement to help you develop in certain areas of your personality and why might this be beneficial to your academic and professional careers? What are ways you can take these results into your everyday lives and how else can you learn to work across differences?
