Cross-Cultural Awareness
Cross-culture awareness refers to the foundation of communication that requires that one stands back from themselves and be more aware of their cultural values, beliefs, and perception. It is a strategy that can help us understand how we can best adapt our approaches, thoughts, and decisions in ensuring that we create positive outcomes (Shepherd, 2). Cultural awareness also requires that we respect other's cultures just as we respect our own. It is required that we view others critically before making decisions. Traveling is the major way that helps promote cultural awareness because it provides an avenue for experiencing world views that are different from your own. Through traveling, people gain insight into other people's cultures hence helping to develop their cultural sensitivity and awareness.
Cross-cultural awareness is important in ensuring that we become culturally sensitive. Cultural sensitivity is realized when one attains all the necessary skills that would make him learn about and understand people from a different cultural background (Davitishvili, 549). With an increasing number of diverse populations that come to live together in the same communities, it is vital that these diverse groups understand the backgrounds of each other for peace to be realized. It requires having the respect of each culture's values and demonstrating some empathy rather than judging them. Being culturally sensitive that comes as a result of the creation of cultural awareness has three major benefits.
Cultural sensitivity through the expansion of cross-cultural awareness is very beneficial. First, it improves creativity on how to solve problems by putting together new perspectives, strategies, and ideas. Problems are better solved once ideas have been identified. Besides, it is necessary for the interacting individuals to be open-minded (Shepherd, 4).
Secondly, it improves the level of respect and mutual understanding among members living together within a community is improved (Shepherd, 4). Members from diverse cultural backgrounds would be able to understand each other's backgrounds, experiences, and values. As a result, such kind of relationship creates empathy instead of judgment.
Thirdly, by being culturally sensitive, people from diverse cultures to appreciate one another. Such kind of appreciation from those staying together results in the existence of peace and harmony. Appreciation of one's culture could involve the exchange of some attributes while embracing the differences.
In a nutshell, because the world has become a global village characterized by a lot of traveling and interactions of people of different cultures, it is vital that there be a cross-cultural awareness. Through such an initiative, these people from different cultural backgrounds would demonstrate respect; embrace one another despite the visible differences for peace to prevail. The importance of cross-cultural awareness has forced big corporations to include cultural sensitivity trainings for their workers' on-boarding process.
