Reflection Paper VII

White-Ethnic Americans Americanization Experiences

Instructions;

Provide a minimum 2-page(s) critical evaluation that,

· Discuss three (3) significant findings from your discoveries on the Americanization experiences among euro-ethnic minorities.

· Marger (2015) categorizes and describes “White-ethnics” as the European-ethnic groups who were “whitened” or “whitewashed” for assimilation and identity with the elite-white Anglo-Saxon Protestant dominant class. What does this whitewashing of Euro-ethnic Americans mean to the discussion of race and class in America?

· Apply the readings of Freire Chapter 1 & 2, and Chavez & Guido DiBrido to evaluate the role of whiteness and skin-privilege on White Americans authentic identity. Does the categorization of all European ethnic groups as “white” add pressure for assimilation into a white-identity–thus identity oppression through and deprived authentic White identity?

· What does the “white trash” identity, which signifies undesirable or “not-quit white” traits articulated through a dominant-white status say about race, class, and privilege among White American? Are all whites privileged? How does this assigned identity relate with previously evaluated assigned identities among minority ethnic groups when it comes to the groups Americanization experiences and being an authentic American?

· Evaluate the materials highlighting the growing despair of substance abuse, alcoholism, and rising suicide rates among working-class white men. Is this despair evidence of the falsity of whiteness and its consequential pressure upon many whites who are unable to meet the standard-status of “being white”?

· How does this discovery into the Americanization of White-ethnics shape your understanding on race as tool of dominance in American society?
