Week 4 Reflection

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, But about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.” - Pope John XXIII

Introduction

The quote “Between what happens to us, the stimulus, and our response to that stimulus, is a space. In that space lies our freedom and power to choose our response. And in those choices lie our growth and our happiness” reminds me just how even the littlest of choices we make in our lives come with consequences. These consequences can either be good or bad. It, however, comes to a point where people intentionally chose to be happy by modifying their lifestyle. This can be triggered by things like age, need for motivation, decisions to quit drugs, lack of a job, or having a new job among others. This paper requires me to reflect on the quote above and think about things I learn this week, how my behavior will change, new ideas I will implement in my relationships, how I can advance globalization, my I can promote social justice and how I can make the world a better place.

What I Learned and Amending My Behavior

This week I learned emotional intelligence, and it means when an individual can recognize their feelings as well as those of others. It requires individuals to utilize the emotional information they have to guide how they think or behave around others, know when to manage or adjust it in different environments, and when they want to achieve different goals. This is important when interacting with different individuals, it allows us to live harmoniously with one another despite our differences in background and upbringing. This will affect my behavior in that I intentionally want to be a good listener and not judge anyone around me (Rosenthal, 2016). I want to understand someone’s point of view before spontaneously reacting. I will be more open-minded and social; this way I will learn more about people through different social groups or even on an individual level. I will also participate in voluntary work which will help the less fortunate since it is not their choice to be disadvantaged.

Ideas I can Use at Work and In Relationships

Self- awareness is very important because it helps me understand my emotions, I have found that reading self-help books and regularly going for therapy helps me understand myself better. Being empathetic and able to motivate myself and those around me will help me help myself and improve others around me (Heath, 2013). Also, I will advance globalization by utilizing social media to share my ideas, knowledge, and experience hoping that I will change one or two lives. Social media has its advantages and flipsides and only those who know how to utilize it effectively benefit from it. For instance, if I started a YouTube channel today that mainly focuses on self-help, then my audience will be those who want to improve themselves or amend their lifestyle for a better life.

Promoting Social Justice and Making This World A Better Place

I will deliberately educate myself about the disadvantage in society for instance those in the LGBTQ community (Carroll, 2018). This way I will understand the challenges that they are going through and find a way to advocate for them since they have rights and they are human. I will also work on the bad habits that make people uncomfortable around me as well as become open-minded. I will also support local organizations through volunteering or monetary means. Embracing diversity is also important in this case since it allows me to learn more about others and encouraging others to be comfortable around me. I will attend local functions such as rallies and also normalize kindness and speaking up in society.

In conclusion, all choices have consequences and we, therefore, need to be mindful of the choices we make. Embracing diversity and having emotional intelligence contributes generously to social justice.
