The coursework consists in analysing a truss of at least 8 members through the direct stiffness
method. Workings and Matlab code should be reported and each step must be explained and
commented (30 marks). Select one joint of the previous truss and identify a simple connection
(e.g. gusset plates). By using the forces calculated for each member, model the connection
through 2D solid Finite elements by using ADINA software and perform the stress analysis.
The report should be including: Truss description – Direct stiffness method workings – Matlab
code – Description of the connection- modelling and meshing – Stress analysis – Identification of
the critical areas for structural design.
How to select the type of truss: Consider the last 2 digits of your student number: If this number is divisible by 2: Pratt Truss If it is divisible by 3: Fink Truss If it is divisible by 5: Warren Truss All the others: Howe Truss
Example: 1789123893 93 divisible by 3 Fink Truss
