Ask for a Reference

• Contact your references directly to ask for a Letter of Reference

• Give your referees plenty of time! As a courtesy, notify your referees at least 2-4 weeks prior to the

deadline. • Let them know that they will receive an email from the JET Program with submission instructions.

They will be asked for:

• Evaluation of Applicant (Part I) - A ratings portion in which your reference evaluates you on a

scale of 1–5 in regards to several different criteria.

• Evaluation of Applicant (Part II) - A letter of recommendation which can be entered online or may be uploaded in .PDF format.

• If your writer’s language of preference is Japanese, let them know that they can switch the application portal into Japanese.

Create a Reference Request

When you create a reference request on the portal, an email will be sent to the reference.

Advise your references to monitor their junk /spam folders for messages from [email protected], subject heading "JET Program Evaluation Request", as these emails are sometimes filtered as spam.

Confirm with your references that they have received the notification. Let them know they can email [email protected] or call (202) 238-6772 if they are having issues.

Monitor/ Follow up with Reference Writers

It is the applicant's responsibility to monitor the status of their reference requests (requested, de- clined, in-progress, or completed) on the application portal.

The JET Program will not notify applicants concerning missing References.
