In order to build trust and cooperation in a community, it is important for the community to understand the progress and process of a police department (James N., et al, 2020). This should be part and parcel of the policing program being forwarded and advanced to promote the image of the police. This means the availability of service and protection to each and every individual in the public. It is crucial to understand that despite there being a negative image towards policing and the manner in which they implement their policies. As such, during the course of this discussion, this will be highlighted and discussed in order to ascertain the manner in which policing and public relations can go hand in hand. It also provides an advantage of the increased use of police services rather than unscrupulous services in the Public area maintained. This might see a reduction in certain activities and more trust in the police.

1. Steps involved in a police public relations campaign

The lack of proper public relations leads to police being perceived as having a disadvantageous public perception. One of the most negative images that the police is usually known for it their use of excessive force. Most times, the use of this force has resulted in deaths and serious injuries to their victims. It as such has been termed as police brutality. This paragraph will discuss the importance of the police having proper public relations.

In creation of a successful public campaign, there are three steps involved. The first step involves define the goals of the police by developing a clear set of objectives to be achieved. From there, an in depth analysis of the strength, weaknesses, opportunities available and the perceived threats which will thereby provide a guideline on how to achieve the set objectives. From thereon, the intended objectives are clear and a proposal on public image is effected that seeks to implement the desired objectives.

Police public relations are the key point to how they are perceived within their communities. However, there are also certain disadvantages that come with the aspect of seeking good relations. One is the increased scrutiny in how police conduct their duties and functions. Most of the time, police usually act by default as a result of their training. This makes each officer unique in their own way in the manner they conduct their duties. The aspect of public relations shines a light on every aspect they conduct. Not to mention the politicization of the police thereby affecting the way they conduct their activities. This is one of the disadvantages that will be highlighted further in the discussion.

Police relations in communities have been known to be effective through the use of policies such as community immersion laws as a result of community policing strategies (Cordner G., 2010). They can also improve on public relations through re-education and making their workforce more aware of the differences in culture among the public and how to go about them. On top of that, efforts to improve relations can be achieved through transactional model of communication as well as active listening to the issues being raised by the concerned parties (Cordner G., 2010).
