Objectives & Purpose
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization that provides emergency assistance, disaster relief, and disaster preparedness to citizens of the United States.
Many of the day to day operations of the Red Cross are carried out by volunteers. Volunteers are required to perform certain tasks such as blood service, disaster service, healthy and safety service, military support or administrative jobs
The purpose of the Red Cross is to protect life and health and to ensure respect for the human being. It promotes mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace amongst all peoples.

History of Red Cross
The Red Cross was initially founded by businessman Henri Dunant who was born in Geneva, Switzerland
In 1859 Dunant saw the aftermath of the battle of Solferino in Italy where over 40,000 soldiers were wounded and dead
In 1863 Dunant founded the International Red Cross
Dunant also developed the International treaty known as the Geneva Convention to protect victims of armed conflicts.

In the late 1860’s after helping soldiers during the civil war she traveled to Europe and it is there where she learned about the Red Cross Movement

Under Barton the Red Cross focused on helping victims of peacetime disasters including the 1889 Johnston flood in Pennsylvania, and the 1893 Hurricane in the South Carolina sea islands

In 1898 the American Red Cross aided the U.S. military for the first time when it provided medical care to soldiers in the Spanish-American war.

Barton resigned as head of the American Red Cross in 1904 at the age of 83

In the early 20th century, the American Red Cross expanded its efforts to include public programs such as first aid training and water safety

In 1948 the American Red Cross launched the nations first blood program for civilians

In the year 2017 the American Red Cross provided approximately 40% of America’s blood and blood products.
Size of the Organization
American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the US, supplying 2,600 hospitals ( approximately 39% of the US blood supply). The charity also assists victims of international disasters and conflicts worldwide, connecting separated family members.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement with approximately 17 million volunteers, members and staff worldwide[2] which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.
Nursing and the Red Cross
Over 20,000 nurses and other health care professionals work with the Red Cross each day.
They work to bring relief to disaster victims, work in military hospitals, and collect blood.
They also develop and teach courses ranging from CPR/first aid to disaster preparedness.
They also serve in management, supervisory, and governing roles
