What is an Effective Literacy Program?

A program that contains parts that are necessary for students to master reading

An effective literacy program should always contain these six major components:

Oral Language

Phonemic Awareness/Phonological Awareness

Phonics

Vocabulary

Fluency

Comprehension

Oral Language Development

Communicating via speaking and listening

First step toward becoming literate

Children are active participants in their learning of language

Children construct or reconstruct language as they learn

Children imitate the language of adults

Language processes are commonly recognized as the basis for learning to read

Language learning is an important part of learning to read

Phonemic Awareness/Phonological Awareness

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear that a spoken word is made up of a series of sounds

Example: map = /m/ /a/ /p/

Phonological Awareness

The ability to hear the sound of the larger parts of language

Examples: Rhymes: blue/shoe Syllables: /lit/ /tle/

Phonics

Phonics is a method that teaches students the systematic relationship between the letters and sounds and how to use this skill to read words.

This process is called decoding

Looking at a word and connecting the letters and sounds and then blending those sounds together to pronounce words

Example: m /mmm/ a/aaa/ t/t/ = mat

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings

The purpose of teaching vocabulary to students is so they are able to understand what words mean and to use them to acquire meaning of what they reading

Vocabulary is an important component because the more words that a student knows and understands the more the student will comprehend when reading

Fluency

This is the ability for a child to read effortlessly

Fluency in reading includes:

Speed

Accuracy

Expression

Fluency is linked to comprehension and when it is achieved a student can start focusing on the meaning of what they are reading

Comprehension

This refers to a children's understanding of what they are reading

Reading comprehension is the process of extracting and constructing meaning from written texts
