Recitation 1 Activity: Stats and Probability

For this Alternative Assessment, you may talk with classmates about how to do tasks on the computer, clarification of tasks or directions, or general questions. Submitting the work of another person is a violation of academic integrity. Your instructor can clarify instructions but will not assist in the completion of this assignment. This work should follow closely to the video lesson. For additional help with Excel, see the Math/Technology Help section in Blackboard.

Starting with the raw data as provided to you:

1. Find each of the following using the built-in functions in Excel:

Mean =

Median =

Sample Variance =

Sample Standard Deviation =

2. Turn the raw data into grouped data by determining 6-12 reasonable class intervals to include all of the data. DO NOT SELECT THE NAMES!

3. Set up bins and create a histogram in Excel. Label horizontal and vertical axes and provide a chart title. Also include the source of the data on the histogram.

4. Set up columns to find the cumulative frequencies and cumulative percentages for the grouped data.

5. Set up columns to compute the standard deviation for the GROUPED DATA, using the mean that was found in part 1.

6. Select and copy all of your work in Excel (not necessarily all of the raw data) and paste on page three of this document.

7. Following your copied work, type a 60-Second Summary which tells about the histogram and an interesting observation about the cumulative percentages.

8. Complete the probability questions by typing your work OR by printing your entire document (after pasting in your Excel work and typing your 60-Second Summary) and then scanning the entire document into one file.

9. Submit your full work (this document and your Excel file) in Blackboard.

Probability Questions If you wish, type your work here and then you can save the full file and submit through Blackboard. If you want to work these problems by hand, you will need to scan the ENTIRE document as one file and submit through Blackboard. (You may delete some instructions to have more space on a page.)

Show work for each response. Give probabilities as percentages, to the nearest tenth of a percent. The event is that you are selecting one name of a professional athlete from your data set (“randomly”) and you are to find the probability of the outcome described in the parentheses based upon your grouping of the data.

1. Find P(the player selected is in the highest class interval)

2. Find P(the player is not in either of the lowest two class intervals)

3. Find P(the player is in the highest or in the lowest class interval)

4. Find P(the player is in the class interval that contains the mean)

5. Find the expected value of total receiving yards for 2019, based on your grouped data. Use the midpoints as the data values and give your answer to the nearest tenth.

Copy and paste your Excel work here and write your summary below. Please adjust the size so that the entire section is within the margins of this page. Also, UPLOAD THIS COMPLETED FILE AS WELL AS YOUR EXCEL FILE INTO THE BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENT FOR LESSON 8: RECITATION 1.
