- We revised our treatment of VP and NP final prepositional phrases by adding a separate kind of rule: adjunction rules. Adjunction rules look, schematically, like the following: XP → XP YP. So far, we’ve found evidence for adjunction of PPs to either VP or NP.

- The adjunction rule is recursive: once VP expands to VP and PP, the new daughter VP can expand once again via the adjunction rule. 


- The optionality of many post-verbal phrases, as indicated by the parenthetical enclosure of each member of that list in the VP rule, is constrained by a verb’s subcategorization frames. Some verbs, like die, permit not phrases as its sister. Other verbs, like send, allow both an NP and a PP.
