3.2 Philosophy
Getting Started
This assignment will have you debate the logical options for describing reality found in Chapter 7 of A Christian Philosophical Journey (CPJ). You should also be able to distinguish our notion of the basic material of the universe. This scenario is based on the apparent paradox of natural versus the supernatural found in Chapter 7 of the CPJ. Also, see the instructor’s devotional for Week Three. It will enable you to determine if reality can really be known in itself, or if we have to live in some approximation of its essence. It seems like there are only two choices between what is seen, and the forces of nature (or the supernatural) which are unseen, but still just as real. Can all truth be reduced to a fact or a visible substance?
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
· Articulate the differences between the various approaches to reality, and their accuracy in relating to what is both seen and unseen.
· Examine the basis for the natural and supernatural aspects of reality.
Resources
· Textbook: A Christian Philosophical Journey
· A Standard Translation of the Bible as noted in the syllabus.

NOTE: You may use the Bible for illustrations in application, but not for proof. You may also want to try to synthesize by coming up with your own new paradigm for these concept (along with your own illustrations).

2. Review the four approaches to reality (materialism, idealism, dualism and realism) in Chapter 7 of the CPJ.
a. Which of the four approaches to reality do you favor or use in life? Can they all be valid at the same time? Why or why not?
b. Can reality really be known in itself, or do we settle for some uncertainty in all of life?
c. What makes you certain that you exist, or even that you will continue to exist?
