ETHICS
Making Ethical Decisions
Making ethical decisions is the critical factor that needs to be made by an individual. According to this chapter, the main topic was a factor to consider before making the decision. What was important and relevant in the chapter was that before deciding on a scenario, there is some consideration a person needs to put in place before concluding on a matter. One must be ready for the consequence that may result after making a decision. Factors to consider are gathering the facts where the person needs to get clarification on the matter arising, getting facts from both parties, and o investigating. The purpose of clarification is to avoid spreading information that is not true or making a wrong judgment that may cause many problems—determining ethical factors that have caused conflict between the two parties by listening to their grievances to resolve the genuine ethical dilemma that occurred among the two parties. If the two parties' information is a contradiction, it will be wise to seek a witness who will help inappropriately judge the case. To some extent, a person needs to list alternative chances to determine why they want the matter to be solved; in most cases, this method works out perfectly if both parties are ready to agree and solve the issue. However, if the parties still disagree on the list of alternatives, they will need to make a decision that will be equal to both parties. Lastly, they will be a need to consider the consequence of the decision made among the two parties, consider the extend of your decision and ensure it will not leave one party with the option of revenging or with a chance of a negative thought. (Rae, 2018).
Since I have a passion for becoming a top decision making in my current organization, I enjoyed reading the subject matter and how the steps to decision making were followed while considering the consequence of the matter. What I liked the most is the decision of confidentiality that was to be kept by the senior manager of the company about the people to be laid off and the challenges that the company was facing. When you encounter a scenario of your friend Ted who is to be laid off and has gotten another opportunity, but he needs to be sure if he is among the list of people to be laid off in order to make a decision, will I assist him, yet I have vowed to keep the company privacy? What I did not like about this chapter is the vow someone takes to keep the company's privacy, and when you encounter a critical case of Tedd, you still have to keep your vow and leave your friend to make a decision that cost him enter life. Something I read in this chapter that is familiar to my culture is the ability to judge correctly by understanding the major cause of the problem without favoring one party. In our culture, the elder will have different meetings and investigations before settling the case and mostly accepted with both parties. What I learned in the chapter, and I can practice in my daily life is that I need to be a critical thinker and follow the proper steps to decide that will help me solve issues amicably. Ethical Theory, Moral Principles, and Medical Decisions
Chapter 12 discusses various basic ethical theories, the major moral principles, and virtue ethics in the medical context. Ethics is found in moral activities that are therefore acceptable in a society or a group of the majority of people in a community. Because various cultures have distinct moral views, the ethics may differ. Ethics assists individuals in determining what must be done, evaluating action choices, and selecting the one that produces the desired results (Munson, 2017, p. 902). We are guided by the principles of ethics and choice, which are essential to our understanding of what is good or desirable. Ethical standards teach us what is good and bad and what we should and should not be. The aim or justification for their being is a source of values and ideals. Investigating, defining, and defending one's ethical views, values, and goals is what human ethics entails. People discover who they are via ethics and strive to maintain that identity. The chapter gathers the arguments made by the philosophers on how they might be applied to moral issues in the medical context. For utilitarianism, "an action is right if it conforms to a rule of conduct that, according to the principle of utility, will produce at least as much utility as any other rule applies to the situation" (Munson, 2017, p. 907). In the medical context, Kant thinks that no matter what the consequences may be, it is always wrong to lie. For him, we should treat people as a means, not as ends. Contrary to Kant, Ross thinks that action is made right by its consequences alone. In the medical context, Ross believes that health care providers should always tell the truth to their patients. For Rawls, "the central task of government is "to preserve and promote the liberty and welfare of individuals'"(Munson, 2017, p. 921). According to Roman Catholic theology, the Christian Ethic is a basic component of morality (Munson, 2017, p. 929). We should consider the preference of others when they are known and when we must advocate for them. This chapter also talked about the major moral principle: the Principle of Nonmaleficence, Beneficence, Utility, Distributive justice, and Autonomy.
The chapter captivated me since it is built on the ethics and religion that I already knew. I was aware of the numerous links between societies, cultures, and acceptable behavior that might be used to better interpersonal relationships. The lives of Christians are the topic of ethics. As deontological principles, the commandments and law of the Bible determine the conduct and acts of Christians. In each case, it is critical to analyze what God has said regarding ethical concerns in the Bible so that clear guidance on approaching a situation is provided. Even though the Bible does not directly address a particular issue, we may usually utilize Biblical principles to make educated moral judgments as Christian. This would be incredibly beneficial in preventing patent infringement, for example. Using the Bible's teachings would help one identify the best solution that would not damage any of the participants and would not break existing legislation. I have realized that ethics play a significant role in our lives. Ethics gives a moral framework or map that an individual may use to make judgments under challenging situations. Ethics may also be utilized to arbitrate a disagreement, allowing the two parties to agree and find a solution to their problem. Ethics entails thinking about and caring for others rather than one's own goals and interests. The chapter was fascinating since it highlighted significant points of view that have an impact on society. It provides various ethical ideas developed by historical thinkers such as Aristotle, Ross, Rawls, and Immanuel Kant to assist us in making decisions.
