California’s Residence
In the book ‘Devil In Blue Dress,” by Walter Mosley shows the way people lived in the
nineteen forties in California. The racism toward people of color and the way they looked at
them. From reading the chapters, I can see the struggle of people of color and the discrimination.
Also, It shows that communities were not as united as nowadays. According to the author states
that he was not happy to meet Mr. Albright because he does not feel comfortable being with
white community, even though the meeting was about business. However, he ended up going to
meet Mr. Albright in Santa Monica. Before Mr. Albright arrive, a bunch of young people came to
him and bullied him without any fear which shows that white people thinks they are better and
stronger than the man of color because of his color. Even though, he could of beat them to death
according the the author, he did not do anything and Mr. Albright saved him in this situation. The
story of racism does not stop here. In addition to that, police men approach him to arrest him
without inform him what he had done wrong, and they said “ You got a right to fall down and
break your face, nigger, you got a right to die.” Personally, this level of hatred is unbelievable
and unacceptable, but it seems that in the past, these type of actions were normal because of
author responds and reactions.
On the other hand, the author has a dream, and it is the California dream. The author is very
happy because he owns a house. Moreover, he is proud of himself paying all his bills in
advanced and be in Los Angeles. The dream seems to be living in LA and owning houses with
paid check. The author states “ just to look out on Los Angeles at night gave me a sense of
power,” which shows that Los Angeles is one of the best places to live in, despite of the
discrimination he faced.
