The Reading Journal is designed as a method for promoting active reading strategies and is intended to help you document and engage with the text in meaningful and insightful ways. Each time you read an assigned section from one of the course texts, record some of your textual experiences in a reading journal entry. Use the guide below to format and arrange your approaches for the Reading Journal entries.
Format:
· Open and save either a Word file or Google Doc (or a notebook if you prefer to handwrite your entries)
· Include the date at the beginning of the entry
· Aspire for entries of a paragraph (3-5 sentences) or so in length
Criteria:
Journal entries should be a method for engaging with your thoughts and the text itself. Ideally, journal entries will be substantial, including at least a small paragraph for each reading section throughout the term. Consistency and depth of idea are general requirements for the journal.
Guidelines:
· Reflect on core concepts and strategies introduced in class as they relate to the text
· Record personal reactions such as thoughts, feelings, and questions
· Relate the text to some other experience or ideas from outside in a significant way
· Interpret the text for depth of understanding
· Analyze particular passages to practice the skills of analysis
· Include artistic and creative content that helps you better relate and engage with the text
