First, be sure and get a firm grasp on the meaning of the essay/research.

Summary Skills and Secondary Ideas…

Find the thesis idea – probably in the opening or conclusion.

Then, find the secondary ideas – these will be the topic sentences that unify each paragraph.

Find key sentences that shift/develop interesting shades of meaning.

Examine word choice for additional shades of meaning.

Always use textual evidence as support….

Secondly, be sure and expand the meaning to Suggested and Interpretive meanings.

Next, apply the Avenues of Truth handout to that essay/research. Which avenues open up meaning for you?

Apply the Interpretive Questions on the same handout.

How is the Essay/Research prompting new thoughts/impressions?
