Lifespan Development Models

Lecture 4

What is a lifespan development Model

A model based on social theory or psychology that

Attempts to create orderly stages marked by social/cognitive development that explain the progression from birth to old age

Most lifespan development model focus heavily on the early stages of life when change is the most rapid and development the most critical.

Recognized models of Lifespan development

Recognized models cont…

Models for the Full Lifespan

The previously mentioned models are important, but they do not cover the entire lifespan

The next two models we will discuss in more detail, attempt to create lifespan stages from birth through old age.

These models are more comprehensive, and will describe the life stage that is the focus of this course.

Havighurst’s Developmental Tasks Theory

Asserts a continuous development

Occurs through the lifespan

Staged

Individual moves to next stage by resolving problems

Cont

People feel accomplished when they achieve task resolution

People are unhappy when they fail

The tasks are normal ones that people from the same culture experience

Cont

In this model developmental tasks are associated with

Biology – physiological maturation/genetics

Psychology

Sociology (specific to culture)

Infant to Early Chilhood

Tasks

Learning to talk

Form relationships with family members

Middle Childhood

Tasks

Learning physical skills

School related learning

Develop conscience and values

Adolescences

Tasks

Develop skills to be a productive member of society

Establishing mature relationships with peers

Early Adulthood

Tasks

Adjusting to death or loss of spouse.

Cont

Havighurst

Would later go on to develop the Activity Theory of Aging

We have already studied this, but you can see how the task model would build directly into this theories creation.

Erikson

A student of Sigmund Freud

He offered a modified Freudian view of development of personal identity through the lifespan.

His theory is divided into 8 psychosocial stages.

Erikson’s Stages

Erikson’s Middle Adulthood (40 to 65)

Generativity vs Stagnation

Adults need to create things that will outlast them

Either having children, or creating positive change that benefits others

Success leads to feelings of usefulness

Failure results in lack of engagement in the world

Erikson’s Maturity (>65)

Ego Integrity vs Despair

Older adults need to look back on life and feel a sense of fulfillment

Success at this stage leads to feeling wise

Failure results from regret and generates bitterness
