Materials Requirement Planning (MRP) is the logic for determining the number of parts, components, and materials needed to produce a product. MRP provides the schedule specifying when each items should be ordered or produced. MRP is focuses on the inventory of production components. From my understanding the purpose of an MRP system is to check which components are needed for complete manufacturing, when to order them, so there is no interruption in production and how many components are in stock.

An article I found is on Absolut Vodka and how they used demand-planning software to improve its distribution to international markets. “The spirits maker says demand-planning software is helping improve its distribution to an increasingly complicated international market marked by the proliferation of products aimed at shifting consumer tastes. That’s also allowing Absolut to keep its production, from sourcing materials to distilling and bottling, anchored in a small corner of southern Sweden." (Page, 2019) When Absolut upgraded their inventory system, their goal was to cut down their inventories and ensure that the right products were delivered to the right places to keep supply-chain costs in check. After three years, Absolut, has seen an improvement in their delivery performance and has reached their goal of maintaining a lower inventory on hand.
