Dance Class
The purpose of this assignment is to observe movement around us on our daily life. When I first saw this assignment, I did not know what to do put then I realized that it is not hard. It is just observing movement around me, any movement no matter how big or small, important or not. Since I started the assignment, I had 5 days to observe fifteen movement observation around me. in this paper, I will talk about 5 of these observation with the 5 elements of dance which are body, action, space, time, and energy.
My first observation was on Thursday, and it was the movement fire while barbequing. Fire is weird, we can see it but can not touch it because it does not have a body that we can physically touch. I liked how the fire moved randomly with the wind pushing it in all directions. The fire’s space is constrained to the grill, and it could not leave it, but it grew bigger and bigger as I added charcoal. I observed this at night, and it took me around an hour or so. Fire is the source of energy that made humans as sophisticated as they are now, we used to gather around fire to warm ourselves, cook food, and to provide lighting. Also, gathering around fire gives us a sense of safety and security from the dark unknowns around us.
The second observation was on the same day as the fire. I looked at the Moon and how at appears every night from the birth on man kind to our present day. The body of the Moon does not move so much but it still looks amazing. When we look at the Moon at first, we might think that it is not moving because it is so far away, and we need to look at it for a long time to see it moving. It moves so slowly as if it says that my life span is longer than ours. The Moon always has its place on the night sky occupying a small space of our huge galaxy. I have observed this for round 3 hours at night. The Moon is the guiding light at night. It makes us feel small in comparison to the universe.
The third observation was on Friday, it was the rain falling. Little small droplets of water mean noting to us but a drop after drop creates lakes and seas. Water is fascinating, it can shape itself in so many different states. Water is both gentle and violent, at can fall as fluffy snowflakes and hard hail. Water is everywhere, it is 71 percent of our Earth’s surface. Also, 60 percent of our bodies is water. I have observed this for around 10 minutes until I got wet and went inside. Water is the source of life. Without it. Nothing can survive.
At the beginning, I thought this assignment is kind of dumb and there is nothing to be gained from it. However, I realized that there are many things happing around us that we do not pay attention to. This assignment made me look at things around me in a different way and now I appreciate them more. I have enjoyed this assignment a lot, it felt like I was meditating and not doing homework.
