Public Health: Heart Attack

This paper is focused on understanding the health issue of heart attack and the possible solutions to improving the health of an associated population. Heart Attack, scientifically known as Myocardial Infarction, is a condition where an individual experiences stoppage or reduced blood flow to the heart or part of the sensitivity which ends up in damaging the heart muscles (White and Chew, 2008). Mostly, someone experiences chest pains or discomfort which spreads to other parts near the chest. Women often show atypical symptoms as compared to men. The primarily affected population is the older adults. What causes heart disease?

The heart is a muscle that requires a steady supply of oxygen to pump blood effectively through the body. Oxygen is supplied to the heart by blood that flows through the coronary arteries. Some types of heart disease damage or block the coronary arteries and the flow of oxygen to the heart. Other forms of heart disease damage or impair the functioning of the heart and blood vessels. Some of the contribu8tory causes of a heart attack include high blood pressure, obesity or diabetes, heavy smoking, inadequate or lack of exercise, high levels of cholesterol in the blood, excessive intake of alcohol, poor diet, high-density lipoprotein and old age (Culic, 2007). In some circumstances, genetics may also contribute to the risk of heart attack. Heart attack poses a lot of burden as a disease. This condition may lead to inpatient hospitalization and death of its victims at worse.

To reduce heart attack, the following recommendations should be achieved in place; Engaging in the physical or aerobic exercise aimed at lowering cardiovascular disease risks, anti-narcotics campaigns to reduce the consumption of alcohol, cigarette and cocaine and adoption of public health measures laid down to reduce or do away with poor diets. Other measures include treatment of the pain, administration of anticoagulation to patients, fibrinolysis, and rehabilitation of survivors of the heart attack.

To ensure the implementation of this procedure, the government bodies together with various non-profit organizations should lead these campaigns. A government should impose public health measures to be followed by the public and regular impact assessment conducted. Lastly, NGOs and Government should provide resources for medication.
