Module 05 Course Project - Pins on Environments that Support Social and Emotional Development
This week you will continue to collect your pins on Pinterest. You will submit your pins on promoting social and emotional development through the environment this week as a checkpoint; however, you are encouraged to continue to revise and add to your boards until your final course project submission.
The organization and naming of your boards is up to you. However, each of the five areas highlighted on the timeline must be addressed on a separate board. As you search throughout the web and Pinterest, you will probably find other pins of interest; feel free to create a fifth board of miscellaneous pins. Miscellaneous boards will be reviewed by your instructor but will not be graded.
This week, find at least 10 pins on environments that support social and/or emotional development.
These can be articles, websites, images, etc. Remember to test each link to make sure it works. If you have questions, please ask!
Paste the link to your Pinterest board into a Word document
Scoring Rubric:
| Criteria | Weight |
| At least 10 pins on early learning environments that promote social and/or emotional development is evidenced. | 15 |
| Each link is accurate and in working condition. | 5 |
| Total | 20 |
Module 05 Written Assignment - Design the Environment to Limit Challenging Behaviors
You have learned how the environment can support social and emotional development while limiting challenging behaviors. Now, let's apply this knowledge!
Is this OK? How would you respond?
What about this one?
What about this one?
What could be going on here?
How do we “handle” this one?
Should we intervene here?
Step 1: Observe and Chart Challenging Behaviors
For this assignment, you will observe children and record any challenging behaviors. Observations can take place in many environments such as the program in which you work, your home with your own children, a nearby park, or a local school. Observe the environment and children for a minimum of one hour to gain an accurate understanding of the space.
You may choose your own observation tool to use (such as a running record or floor plan of the environment with anecdotal notes) or modify the behavior charting plan template given in our course.
Step 2: Write a Written Reflection (minimum 2 Pages)
Explain the environment you observed.
Briefly describe the children's age and the group size.
Identify any trends you noticed in challenging behavior patterns and where these behaviors occurred.
Identify at least one environmental change that you will be making based on your observation.
Identify the intended outcome of this change (that is, what you hope will happen by making this change).
Submit BOTH your completed observation tool AND your summary.
You May Set Your Paper Up With These Subtitles, if you Want to:
Explain the environment
Children's age and the group size
Trends
Identify at least one environmental change
Identify the intended outcome
Behavior Tracking Chart
| Daily Schedule (List daily activities) | Time | Length of Activity | Transition Offered? | Does Challenging Behavior Occur (Y/N)? | Specific Behaviors Observed | Notes |
| Example: Snack | 9:00am | 30mins | All children clean up, then sit down together | Y | Several children do not want to leave block area for snack. Anna always cries to sit next to Tiara. Joseph hits several friends while waiting for snack. | Multiple children are not engaged. How could I structure snack time differently? |
So… What do we submit again?
1) The completed observation tool (whatever you chose to use; the behavior tracking chart from class, running records, floor plan of the environment with anecdotal notes, etc.).
2) A 2-page summary/reflection of the quality of the environment and your observation experience. Make sure to include:
Explain the environment you observed.
Briefly describe the children's age and the group size.
Identify any trends you noticed in challenging behavior patterns and where these behaviors occurred.
Identify at least one environmental change that you will be making based on your observation.
Identify the intended outcome of this change (that is, what you hope will happen by making this change).
Scoring Rubric:
| Criteria | Weight |
| The completed observation tool is submitted as supplemental information. | 20 |
| A summary of the following is provided in a minimum of 2 pages. Summary is based upon findings from observation, specific examples, and includes the following details: The environment observed The children's age and the group size Any trends noticed in challenging behavior patterns and where these behaviors occurred At least one environmental change that student will make based on observation The intended outcome of this change | 20 |
| College level writing is applied. Student used APA format. There are minimal spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. Student used complete sentences, correct grammar, and full paragraphs. | 10 |
| Total | 50 |
Module 5 Discussion: Social and Emotional Learning Across Cultures
To prepare for this discussion, be sure to view the video segments identified on the "Preschool in Three Cultures" lecture page in this module. After you have viewed the segments, answer the discussion question below.
In what ways were the children's social and emotional development being supported (through play and/or the environment) in each of the three cultures? Share one example from each culture.
Please remember, respectful language is required.
Please make your initial post by midweek, and respond to at least one other student's post by the end of the week.
Scoring Rubric
25 points= Author writes at least one thoughtful, insightful initial post by Tuesday, midnight. Author responds, thoughtfully and thoroughly, to at least one of his or her peers by Saturday, midnight. Posts are free of spelling and grammatical errors.
15 points= Author writes at least one thoughtful, insightful initial post by Tuesday, midnight. Posts are free of spelling and grammatical errors.
0 points= No posts.
