Understanding, Innovating, and Using The Internet of Things
Presented By
Henry A. McKelvey
Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at
The University of the Potomac
What is the Internet of Things
Simply Put
The providing of Internet connectivity to devices that at one time did not require Internet connectivity
Refrigerators
Automobiles
Clothes (Shirts, Shoes, Pants, etc.)
UAVs (Drones)
Automation Systems (SCADA, Alarm Systems, etc.)
“THE LIST GOES ON
Why Do We Need The Internet of Things
The world has become more complex
Data is King (and the Kingdom is vast)
Data and Information are being collected from everywhere
Relationships between people and things needed compiling and explaining
Connectivity is required for data gathering
The Internet became the glue by which this is achieved
The Computer Became Smaller
With that the ability to install computers in everything
These computers needed to communicate with each other
The Internet provided the Network
In the past IP Address space was limited
IPv4 (was good until Address hording occurred)
NAT/PAT (this worked until routable IP were required)
IPv6 (This gave use the required number of IP Addresses)
The Embedded Processor
Is a type of microprocessor
Designed into a system to control electrical and mechanical functions.
Simple in design
Limited in computational power and I/O capabilities
Minimal power requirements
Examples of Systems containing Embedded Processors
The Raspberry Pi
The Raspberry Pi 3 Block Diagram
The WPJ344 WiFi Embedded Processor Board

How is all of this put together Smart Road
Stratum 1 Clock
Timed from GPS Satellite (Stratum 0)
Provides Stratum 1 timing to my home network
Accurate with a “24 hour” hold over
Why?
Because I could
There are more practical uses
Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Making SCADA Closed Loop Control Networks Internet accessible
Alarm company systems
Automation and Remote Control
Robotics (Car Industry, Aviation Industry, and Aquatics Industry)
IIoT must be explained in its own terms and not defined by IOT explanations
How do I get on board
Learn how to use the Raspberry Pi
Linux
Scratch, Java, Python
C and C++
Learn about other Embedded Processor Systems
Join a Maker Club or Group (Better yet create your own)
Start building things
Where to buy these boards
www.amazon.com (Raspberry Pi)
https://www.readylinksystems.com/products/wpj344lv?variant=49541256839 (WPJ344)
You can get books on how to learn the coding and programming languages from amazon.com
Why hackers use these boards
Ease of purchase
Ease of Concealment
Ease of use
Lack of knowledge
Think about the TV series “GOD Friended Me” (The Raspberry Pi Episode)
What Can Hackers do With The Raspberry Pi
Remote Computing
Back-dooring Systems
Building an alternative entry node
Remote Viewing of Targets
Data Retrieval from the network
