A study of Ransomware

Protection and security are a constant threat when it comes to information technology infrastructure. Cyber threats are consistently in the rise with great dynamism making cyber warfare stiff and challenging. Such emerging threats that have gained popularity is Ransonware. This threat continues to create major havoc to organization’s critical infrastructure due to its periodical variation and sophistication. Ransomwares’s attacks are extremely discriminating with damages such as encryption of user’s important files through cryptoviral extortion that blocks the user from accessing their files. W. H. (2008) It inflicts financial loss as well as data breach that can lead to reputational damage. Traditional security mechanisms have proved to be vulnerable to the new ransomware’s attack pattern. There is need to develop a more advanced technique which detects and mitigate ransomwares threat. This article suggests that a solution can be found through the general detection method.

This paper seeks to propose an effective method to prevent ransomwares modified attacks on information infrastructure focusing specifically on android space. This method extensively detects and identifies ransomware attack as fast as possible to prevent damage. Through memory usage and processor behaviour, the method checks and study stored files and system processes. Processes with irregular behaviour can easily be detected. Once a process is suspected to be running ransomware, this proposed tool will automatically stop the process. It then goes ahead to ask for permission or confirmation action from the user to delete or uninstall the program which runs the suspected process. The users action is then stored in the data base. This proposed mechanism has proved to be advantageous since the user do not have to save the pattern for the system to work. In addition to its noticeable speed, the system can effectively determine very sophisticated patterns of ransomware and provide protection with least damage.
