13:00 Alex: Hi Randy
13:04: Alex Liang has left this chat
13:04 Alex: Hi Randy
13:04: Alex Liang has just entered this chat
13:09: Randy Lawrence has just entered this chat
13:09 Alex: Hi Randy
13:10 Randy: Hi, Alex. Sorry for the delay. Coursespaces is so slow and won't load at times.
13:10 Randy: Let me just get your Consultation info out
13:10 Alex: No worries, thanks for meeting me.
13:11 Alex: Of course, thanks
13:12 Randy: So, your research question(s) is this:
13:12 Randy: eating disorders influence the mental and physical Development of students ? What are their long term consequences?
13:13 Alex: yes
13:14 Alex: so there are various types of eating disorder
13:14 Randy: There are a number of different eating disorders, each cause different physical issues and problems.
13:14 Randy: How would be able to discuss them all?
13:15 Randy: How would you, that is, be able to discuss them all?
13:16 Alex: sometimes they may have similar influences
13:16 Alex: do you think that I should focus on just one instead of the general eating disorder?
13:17 Randy: You could do, say two or three in detail. Maybe the most common.
13:18 Randy: You have both under-eating and over-eating disorders
13:18 Alex: I think even though eating disorder influences individuals differently, I think there should be some general problems as well
13:19 Alex: the eating disorder in general affects individuals weight for example
13:19 Randy: How would you frame your argument?
13:21 Randy: Are there any people or groups who argue that there are no long term health problems?
13:22 Alex: hmm, I think you are right. the argument I have right now is too broad, I should narrow it down to one or two types of eating disorder.
13:23 Alex: I don't think so, there are long term consequences.
13:23 Alex: I haven't got I chance to look if there is anyone who states that there aren't long term consequences
13:24 Randy: Also, are the long term health problems in dispute? If everyone agrees that that there are long-term health problem, due to the amount of research that has been done on eating disorders, who would you persuade with the arguement?
13:24 Alex: I think most of them agrees that it has long term problem
13:25 Randy: I agree. So we need to find an area in this topic that has a bit of controversy.
13:25 Alex: oh I see
13:26 Randy: I assume that you believe that long-term healthy problems occur due to eating disorders, yes?
13:26 Alex: in my annotation, there is one type of eating disorder, I think is controversy.
13:26 Alex: yes
13:26 Randy: Great! What is it?
13:27 Alex: it's orthorexia nervosa, so basically it's an obsession with eating healthy foods
13:27 Randy: Interesting!
13:27 Randy: I haven't even heard of that one.
13:27 Randy: What is the controversy?
13:27 Alex: not only healthy foods but healthy diets as well
13:29 Alex: everyone nowadays thinks that we should eat more healthily, however, there could be an obsession with healthy foods and that may potentially lead to another eating disorder
13:29 Randy: So it is an unhealthy obsession with healthy eating.
13:29 Alex: exactly
13:29 Randy: Yes, that sounds like it would have controversy.
13:30 Randy: I think it is a great topic.
13:30 Randy: So now we need to formulate a thesis. Any ideas?
13:31 Randy: What would you want to prove?
13:32 Alex: by the way, the orthorexia and anorexia nervosa are often related when people discuss the topic, should I include that as well?
13:34 Alex: restrictive anorexia is basically that they have a high restriction about what they eat everything, and lead to a extremely low body weight
13:34 Randy: Definitely, I have a feeling that the two have very similar symptoms, one is the avoidance of unhealthy food and the other is an avoidance of all food. Probably, the suffer obsesses so much about what constitutes "healthy" that their definition gets more and more rescritive.
13:35 Alex: for the thesis, maybe I can do how they are similar and different, yet affecting each other?
13:35 Randy: So what would you want to prove in your research paper?
13:36 Randy: That is a strategy, but you need to prove something in a thesis.
13:36 Randy: Fill this in:
13:37 Randy: I believe __________ is a problem because of 1)_________, 2) ________ and 3)_______.
13:38 Randy: So, Orthorexia nervosa is a little know mental health issue that is a problem...
13:40 Randy: You can either 1) explain why O.N is a problem and offer a solution.
13:41 Alex: because it could potentially lead to other eating disorder; it has a close relationship with anorexia;
13:43 Alex: can I do those two and offer a solution like you said?
13:43 Randy: I think you can use anorexia as a comparison, but O.N. is a disorder in and of itself. The two are similar, but not identical. And I don't know if experts think that O.N. necessarily leads to anorexia
13:44 Randy: Do they say it is a branch of anorexia?
13:45 Alex: no I don't think so
13:45 Randy: You could either explain the problems of O.N as a disease and offer solution for treatment.
13:47 Randy: Or look into why O.N. isn't more widely know and provide solution(s) as to how it should be taken more seriously as an issue.
13:47 Alex: I think I will do the second option
13:48 Alex: why it is not widely know and how it could be taken more seriously
13:49 Randy: I agree. I would like to know more about it and why it isn't discussed more, although I think I have a good idea.
13:50 Alex: what idea?
13:52 Randy: A good idea of why we haven't heard about it. People associate healthy eating with being healthy, so being obsessed about it would make you "healthier"
13:52 Randy: unlike anorexia, which is not eating at all and we all know that is bad.
13:53 Alex: true
13:53 Randy: Ok, so the next step is to formulate you thesis, even a rough one, and see what sources you can find for evidence
13:54 Alex: ok I will look deeper and find some other sources
13:55 Alex: I only read one about it since I was preparing for writing about general eating disorder
13:55 Randy: When you write up your consultation summary, explain what we decided here, your course of action and a rough thesis... ending with your next steps.
13:55 Randy: I think you are good to go.
13:55 Randy: Is there any other questions?
13:56 Alex: sounds great, thanks
13:57 Alex: nope, but could I view the chat history after I close the chat?
13:58 Alex: oh never mind, I accidentally closed it.
13:59 Alex: thanks for the meeting, it is really helpful
13:59 Randy: I will see if I can save it and send it to you.
14:00 Alex: thanks that would be great!
14:01 Alex: Again, thanks and have a great day. Bye
