PHIL 1301: Introduction to Philosophy

Prof. Garrett

Term Paper Prompt

Due April 25, 2018

Students are required to submit a 1000-word (minimum) term paper, which will count for 20% of their final course grade. This paper will be in 12-point Times New Roman Font and will be double spaced. All citations should conform to MLA style formatting. Citations should not come from secondhand reports, especially when referring to philosophers. A bibliography should be attached at the end.

The student will consider two questions, using at least 400 words for each question. First, the student will consider why justice is important within a community. The student will provide a description of what justice is, how it arises/exists, and how it affects a community.

Second, the student will consider if/how justice can overcome differences in communities and be extended beyond their immediate community. Is universal justice possible or can justice only exist within a specific community?

The student must incorporate significant references to at least one thinker discussed in the course so far. The paper must include the following:

Cover Page: This must include the student’s name, course section, and title of paper.

Treatment of Justice in a Community

Consideration of Universal Justice

Philosophical Engagement: Engagement with a philosopher should be constant throughout both parts of the paper.

Papers must be submitted through eCampus. Any student who turns in plagiarized work for the term paper will receive a failing grade for the course.

Students will receive 3 points of extra credit if they have the writing lab look over their paper prior to the due date and provide Prof. Garrett with proof of that meeting. Going to the writing lab on the due date will not count towards extra credit.

Students who submit their paper by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, April 18, will have the opportunity to perform corrections. Any papers submitted after this date will not be allowed to perform corrections.
