Therapy 2
NMED 462 – Radionuclide Therapies
Case Study- Final Project
Due Date: Tuesday December 5th, 2017 by 11:59 pm
A Case Study will be conducted on one of the therapy procedures discussed in class. You will write a 5-8 page paper on a radionuclide therapy of your choice (double spaced, 12 point font with a title page, abstract page, and references page). Create a patient history sheet suitable for this radionuclide therapy procedure.
Part 1: Using your text books or other references, you will need to determine the
appropriate patient history questions to be addressed for the therapy. Design a medical history sheet and then “obtain a patient history” using these questions. The history sheet will need to be turned into when the assignment is due and must look professional. The history sheet does not count towards the 5-8 pages of text.
[10% of grade]
Part 2: Write a “Case Study” using your therapy procedure assigned. The following points should be addressed somewhere in the case study:
a. Research the disease state presented. Identify and discuss the disease state by answering the following:
[15% of grade]
1. Etiology (causes) of this disease state
2. Typical signs/symptoms
3. Treatment methods
4. Risk vs. Benefit of therapy
5. Prognosis of a patient with this disorder
b. Describe the medical history of the patient (signs/symptoms) with this disease state, emphasizing those areas that may be pertinent to the tentative diagnosis for which the nuclear medicine study has been requested. Explain why these history questions apply. Explain why the nuclear medicine study would be ordered based on the medical history. [20% of grade]
c. Research and discuss any pertinent non-radionuclide therapies or other nuclear medicine exams which may be ordered for a patient with this disease state and explain why this information is beneficial to the physician for proper diagnosis (i.e., labs, x-rays, radiation therapies, bone scans, PET/CT, etc.). Be specific. Describe the results of these tests and explain how these results confirm or rule out the tentative diagnosis. [15% of grade]
d. Describe the protocol of the therapy procedure being performed. Be sure to include all technical information such as patient prep and why or why not, radiopharmaceutical used and why, dosage given, room preparation and why, whether a scan is acquired and why or why not.
[20% of grade]
e. Describe the results of the therapy for this specific patient and the repercussions of these results. Be specific. Explain if therapy was effective for the patient or whether additional treatment was necessary. Give a prognosis for the patient following the therapy.
[10% of grade]
f. Summarize the entire case study reflecting on the care of the patient, the type of test ordered, and the results of the test
[5% of grade]
The paper should be submitted as a Word Document to Blackboard using the link provided. You may turn in your original patient history sheet to me in person or electronically. Please make sure your history sheet is neat and professionally made. Cite all references using an APA or MLA bibliography format on a separate page. A minimum of three references (not including dictionaries) should be cited. Points will be awarded for the quality of your work, or will be deducted for sloppiness, misspellings, inappropriate grammar, and/or poor punctuation.
